Need help deciding what new shows to check out this fall? Check out five new dramas you may want to skip, and check back next week for five dramas you will definitely want to check out!

There are a lot of new shows premiering in fall 2014, and it’s not always easy to determine which will be worth getting wrapped up in, and which are bound to get cancelled after five episodes. Don’t fret! We are here to help. Check out these five dramas that we don’t think hold much promise for lasting longer than a handful of episodes this fall. And make sure to check back for the least promising comedies later this week!

‘Scorpion’ (CBS)

Not everything about Scorpion sounds terrible. We really love Katherine McPhee, and we like the idea of a bunch of smarties getting together to save the world on a weekly basis. Unfortunately, there’s no way this show will last an entire 22 episode season. Watching the trailer makes it absolutely clear that while a premise like this could do really well on television, this particular version will not be one that lasts. Maybe if the pilot didn’t have such a flashy problem to solve, or maybe if we truly believed that a diner waitress could drive a genius at 100mph and not kill them both in minutes we could believe this show has a chance, but it just doesn’t look promising.

‘Madam Secretary’ (CBS)

While Tea Leoni is a dependable, solid actress to lead a series like this, she isn’t the type to draw the crowd, which is exactly why this show probably won’t last more than a season. Unfortunately, Madame Secretary has impossible shoes to fill. The greatness of political dramas set in the White House that have come before will hinder the success of an otherwise worthwhile program. The legacies of shows like The West Wing, Commander in Chief and even comedies like Veep will be what ultimately ends this show’s run early.

‘Jane the Virgin’ (CW)

The entire premise of this show is that a woman gets accidentally artificially inseminated. She then has to convince her family and friends that despite being pregnant, she is in fact a virgin. There is also the obvious parallels to her own mother’s pregnancy, the doting, patient boyfriend who can’t deal with the situation, and the wise grandmother who you think would be the last person to understand. This show seems to dole out one pregnancy cliche after another. Never mind that the whole pregnancy storyline can only last a season at most. So many things seem to be working against this show that we can’t help but feel like it’s doomed from the start.

‘Forever’ (ABC)

It seems a bit on the nose to call a show all about a medical examiner that doesn’t stay dead Forever, but that’s the least of this show’s problems. The trailer shows the main character dying at least three different ways, and as that is the only thing keeping this from being no different than your run of the mill crime drama, it’s hard to see any longevity for this show. Throw in the lack of an well-known male lead and you can see the failure for Forever a mile away.

‘The Mysteries of Laura’ (NBC)

There’s a lot to like about The Mysteries of Laura. Debra Messing and Josh Lucas as a married couple with two kids? Sounds great. A lady cop taking charge of the investigation that is not afraid to use her womanly intuition and attitude to keep her subordinates in line? Awesome. It’s when you combine the two that this thing goes off the rails. It’s hard to believe that Debra Messing’s character, Laura, would have much time for her family if she is running around NYC at all hours of the night chasing leads. There’s something off about this show. We can’t quite put our finger on it, but if we could choose one of these five shows to prove us wrong, it would have to be this one, purely because we love Debra Messing.

Make sure to check back later this week for the least promising new comedies, and next week for the most promising shows for fall 2014.
