The 100 season 2 returns this week! In a new interview, Jason Rothenberg reveals what we can expect when the show returns, teasing reunions and dark twists.

Layne Morgan from IGN has chatted with The 100 showrunner Jason Rothenberg about season 2 of the CW series, which premieres this Wednesday.

Rothenberg is asked about the general theme for the season, and says that it will be asking and answering the questions, “How far will you go to survive? How dark will you go in order to do what you need to do for your own people? And […] can you come back from that? At what point does the good guy become the bad guy? Can you go too far to save your people?”

One of the most heroic characters in season 1 was Clarke (Eliza Taylor). Looking a little further ahead, Rothenberg teases, “by the end of the season, the things we will see Clarke do will blow your mind. She’s awesome.”

While Rothenberg has previously stated that the show isn’t about romance, he does acknowledge that the characters’ relationships (both romantic and otherwise) will always be the most important thing driving their actions.

He highlights Lincoln (Ricky Whittle) and Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos)’s “star-crossed” romance, saying, “We’re going to play that out in a pretty intense way this season. That’s the only one that’s requited.”

Finn (Thomas McDonell) and Clarke’s feelings may be requited as well, “but that takes some pretty interesting turns,” Rothenberg says (well, if he dies, we guess that’s a pretty sharp U-turn for that ship).

As for Clarke and Bellamy (Bob Morley), “that develops in interesting ways – not in a pure romantic way but certainly they come to need each other and respect each other in surprising ways.”

Finally, Rothenberg reveals that in season 2, we’ll begin to understand and move further into the Grounders’ world. Even as the characters we know are focused on finding each other, we’ll meet new Grounder characters, and learn more about the people living in Mt. Weather.
