When The 100 returns tonight with season 2, episode 9, it’s only going from bad to worse as the Sky People deal with Finn’s death and the wrath of the Grounders.

The winter hiatus was a merciful chance for The 100 fans to deal with the tragic death of Finn, who was killed by Clarke in season 2, episode 8. But the characters haven’t had the same grieving time: in fact, The 100 season 2, episode 9 picks up the second episode 8 ended.

Where we left off

In The 100 season 2, our heroes’ circumstances have changed significantly, for better or worse.

After Clarke, Jasper, Monty and most of the other delinquents were captured by the Mountain Men, Clarke managed to escape with the help of Anya, desperate to find out what happened to Finn and Bellamy.

Her two favorite boys were actually off to a good start, escaping the Grounder who’d captured them, and falling into the hands of Kane and the other adults who had escaped the Ark. They returned to Camp Jaha, the new stronghold of the Sky People, where they also reunited with Raven (after being shot and enduring an intense surgery, she now walks with a cane).

After Kane had Abby punished for allowing the kids to go off in pursuit of their friends, Kane elected to leave camp in an attempt to make peace with the Grounders. Shortly after, Clarke found her way back to camp — literally just missing Finn, who was becoming desperate in his search for her, and had taken off for a Grounder camp with Murphy.

It’s tragic because we know how close they came to finding each other in time. Clarke, Bellamy and the recently returned Octavia (who’d lost Lincoln to the Mountain Men, who were busy turning him into a Reaper) chased Finn and Murphy to the camp, but they were only minutes too late: Finn had begun gunning down the Grounders who tried to overthrow him, and sealed his fate.

Although they were finally reunited, it was clear that Clarke would never be able to look at Finn the same way.

After Reaper-Lincoln was captured, and eventually cured by Abby, Clarke managed to strike a truce with the somewhat more well-meaning leader Lexa. On one condition: Finn was to be handed over to the Grounders, to be subjected to a slow and painful execution in penance for the 18 lives he took.

Finn eventually handed himself over, and Clarke only had one option left. She killed him quickly, risking death herself — but Lexa relented. “It is done,” she told the raging Grounders, while Raven’s heart audibly broke in the distance.

In Mount Weather, Jasper and Monty were beginning to uncover the truth about the operation: they are keeping Grounders in cages to slowly drain them of blood to cure the Mountain Men of radiation poisoning, and they’re hatching a plot to do the same to the 47 delinquents who remain in the mountain.

Jaha had a whole little side-quest of his own, escaping the Ark with the help of the ghost of his son Wells, landing in the desert, and being taken to the same Grounder prison as Kane (talk about fate!). He was returned to Camp Jaha with a message, “Run or die,” and with a belief that the Sky People’s future lay in the City of Light. Unfortunately for him, Abby is not relinquishing her position as Chancellor, and Jaha is more prisoner than leader right now.

What happens next?

In The 100 season 2, episode 9, the truce with the Grounders will fall apart almost before it’s begun, as a Grounder is poisoned and everyone thinks Raven did it.

The promos reveal that she is strung up and possibly tortured, and we have to hope that Clarke finds a way to save her (even through the grief that will literally be haunting her).

The Grounders and Sky People were intending to move against Mount Weather together, to save both the delinquents and the captured Grounders. It is uncertain whether this alliance will still be possible.

Jasper, Monty and their new friend Maya will be desperately trying to escape Mount Weather, but they’re moving against a very sharp deadline because President Wallace’s son Cage seems to be edging closer to convincing his father that it is worth sacrificing the kids’ lives if it means the Mountain Men could finally walk on the ground.

The official description for The 100 season 2, episode 9, “Remember Me” reads:

“Clarke strikes a deal with Lexa and Indra. Abby and Kane begin to realize that decision making powers are out of their hands. A seething Raven is unable to control her emotions. A bold move threatens to destroy the newly formed alliance between the sky people and the Grounders, and a familiar face haunts Clarke. Meanwhile, back at Mount Weather, Monty comes up with a risky plan.”

It certainly suggests that we’ll learn more about Lexa’s past, and hopefully begin to see more sides to the Grounders as the season progresses.
