Terry Pratchett tragically passed away last week, but fans of the iconic author have one last Discworld novel to look forward to.

We were devastated to learn of Terry Pratchett’s passing: the 66-year-old author had been struggling with Alzheimer’s disease for many years, but continued to write until the very end – and clearly had a lot more stories left to tell.

Before his death, the novel that would turn out to be his last was announced: The Shepherd’s Crown, a Discworld novel centering on the character Tiffany Aching.

Tiffany is a young witch in training, and has been featured in four previous Discworld novels: The Wee Free Men, A Hat Full of Sky, Wintersmith, and I Shall Wear Midnight.

In The Shepherd’s Crown, Tiffany will finally come of age, facing the cruel world of adulthood after being a good-hearted, well-meaning child.

Pratchett fans will be happy to learn that the author was indeed able to complete the manuscript before his passing – in other words, it’s not going to be patched up from unfinished notes and ideas. It’ll truly be Pratchett’s words, as we know and love them.

Artist Paul Kidby is currently working on illustrations for the novel, and has confirmed on his blog that The Shepherd’s Crown will be released in the fall of 2015.

It is fitting that Pratchett’s final novel should be set in his fantastic Discworld universe. And the character, Tiffany, has grown to be many fans’ favorite after she made her debut in 2003.

We also very much look forward to a last bit of life wisdom from Nanny Ogg, Granny Weatherwax, and the other witches. It’ll certainly be a bittersweet reading experience, but we will savor it for what it is: the last bit of magic that Pratchett left for the world.
