Visionary filmmaker Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) is well known for seldom releasing new films, in fact over his illustrious 40-year career he has directed only five films. It will therefore come as a shock that in addition to already having wrapped principle photography on one film, Malick is prepping to film not one, but two, new projects back-to-back in 2012!

It was already a big of a shock to hear Malick was in production on yet another film during the release of The Tree of Life. The film, now tentatively called The Burial, is in post-production and features an impressive cast with the likes of Ben Affleck (The Town), Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener), Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men), Rachel McAdams (The Notebook), Olga Kurylenko (Quantom of Solace), Barry Pepper (True Grit), Amanda Peet (2012), Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon) and Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life). As with most Malick films, details on the project are sparse, although insiders call it a romantic drama.

In addition to this exciting news, Variety is now reporting that Terrence Malick is preparing to launch two new films to buyers at this week’s American Film Market, with partner FilmNation.

The first title is Lawless and is set to star Christian Bale (The Dark Knight), Ryan Gosling (Drive), Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings), Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and Haley Bennett (Marley & Me). Further details on the project are currently unknown.

The next project is entitled Knight of Cups and also stars both Bale and Blanchett, along with Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen). While all details on these projects are unknown, they are said to have two different narratives despite the fact they both star both Bale and Blanchett, and will shoot back-to-back in 2012. The New World and The Tree of Life producers Sarah Green and Nicolas Gonda are set to produce both features. FilmNation is handling the sale of all three projects both internationally and domestically.
