It’s been a long time since James Cameron has had a big hand in a Terminator movie, but as the rights are set to return to him, there’s hope for more.

The history of the Terminator franchise and how its passed from hand to hand is a complicated one, but suffice it to say Cameron kicked it off back in 1984, launching both his career and that of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Cameron directed both the first and second installments, but has been hands-off since then — until Terminator: Genisys, that is. This most recent film reportedly inspired Cameron to rejoin the franchise. (Though it inspired Emilia Clarke to end her involvement.)

Deadline is now stating that as the 35th anniversary approaches in 2019, all rights to the Terminator franchise will return to him, allowing him to take the character in whatever direction he wishes.

Even better, Deadpool director Tim Miller is already in talks to direct the reboot.

Interestingly, Deadline specifically says this new film “might finally get it right in drawing a close in the battle between humans and Skynet.” So could we be seeing the end of the Terminator franchise for good?

Cameron is currently at work on four Avatar sequels, whereas Miller just recently left Deadpool 2 in the hands of David Leitch.
