A seemingly reputable rumor about the possible plot of Terminator: Genesis suggests that the plot might be similar in structure to Back to the Future Part II.
The rumor comes from Moviehole. While they aren’t the most prolific at scoop breaking, they have been right about a few Terminator: Genesis details so far. This leads us to believe there’s a chance they could be right about this one too.
We’ve known for a while Terminator: Genesis will be a reboot of sorts, but this rumor suggests that it may be more than that. According to Moviehole’s source, Terminator 5 will take place during different times: the future, 1984, 1991, and another important time. The 1984 and 1991 times will have important plot points of Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, respectively.
The rumor also states that while the new film will contain important plot points from the first two movies, not everything will work out the same as they did in those films. Some elements will be changed by the events of this new movie, much like in Back to the Future Part II.
With this potential plot, the elements we’ve known for so long would be altered. This would seemingly be because at some point in time it was realized that something went wrong which needs to be changed.
Now, if you’re starting to get worried, perhaps the Terminator himself can provide you with some relief. In an interview with The Arnold Fans, Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “The script is fantastic so I’m really looking forward to this film.” The full interview contains more details about where Terminator: Genesis will film.
Obviously we don’t know whether or not the script that’s in the rumor is the one Schwarzenegger was talking about or not, but regardless, he is talking about the actual script.
Along with Schwarzenegger returning to star, the film will also star Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, and Jason Clarke as John Connor. The movie will be directed by Game of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor from a script written by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier.
