HBO Max and Matt Reeves’ Gotham P.D. drama will have to carry on without Terence Winter.

According to Variety, Boardwalk Empire vet Terence Winter, who was originally slated to serve as writer and showrunner on HBO Max’s Gotham P.D. drama, has walked away from the project.

The new series was originally given a straight-to-series order by the streamer back in July, and is meant to serve as a tie-in to director Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson.

When the series was initially announced, it was also revealed that Winter would serve as the series’ writer alongside The Batman producer Dylan Clark.

Now, Winter is choosing to walk away from the project due to creative differences.

HBO Max’s Gotham P.D. series is set in the same world as the one Reeves is building for The Batman. Per the initial press release announcing the series, the show will “build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms.”

Speaking to working on the new HBO Max series, Reeves said back in July called the series “an amazing opportunity” to both expand the vision of the world he’s creating for the film, but also to “explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a long form format can afford.

HBO Max has not yet commented on Winter’s exit, or spoken to who might replace him now that the series is without one of its intended writers.
