Game of Thrones is quickly becoming a Who’s Who of British actors, similar to Harry Potter and Doctor Who. We pick 10 iconic British actors that absolutely must join the cast before the series is over. Spoilers ahead.

Who could appear in Game of Thrones season 4? Although Britain is full of talented actors and actresses of all ages, somehow certain franchises seem to attract all of them. When a project can attract knighted, British stage actors, it’s usually a good sign that it’s worth watching – and Game of Thrones has certainly reached that level.

Three seasons in, we’ve already enjoyed the pedigree and talent of big-name British actors such as Sean Bean, Liam Cunningham, Charles Dance, Ciarán Hinds and Dame Diana Rigg.

We’re sure Game of Thrones season 4 and beyond will bring us even more big names – and here are our top 10 British actors we’d like to see appear on Game of Thrones.

Jim Broadbent

64-year-old Jim Broadbent is one of the most recognizable British screen actors, best known for playing kindly, older, somewhat discombobulated gentlemen such as Bridget Jones’ father and Professor Slughorn in Harry Potter. But Broadbent also has a very commanding presence, as we’ve seen in movies like Moulin Rouge and The Young Victoria.

In Game of Thrones, we imagine Broadbent as an older nobleman who is perhaps a little out of his depth now that the power structure of Westeros is falling to pieces, but is nonetheless prepared to fight for the cause he believes in. Game of Thrones is currently casting Margaery Tyrell’s father Mace for season 4, and we hope that Broadbent is considered for the role!

John Rhys Davies

John Rhys Davies is a Welsh actor best known for playing Gimli in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the excavator Sallah in the Indiana Jones franchise. Before his iconic roles, John Rhys Davies was a frequent television and voice actor, and he continues to do voice work to this day.

We would love to see the 69 year old actor play Lord Randyll Tarly of Horn Hill: the brilliant battle commander and cruel father of Samwell. He has the screen presence to play a terrifying war strategist, and it helps that he bears a physical resemblance to John Bradley’s bumbling interpretation of Sam.

Lenora Crichlow

28-year-old Lenora Crichlow is best known for her role in the popular British sci-fi drama series Being Human. She’s appeared on a number of different TV series including Doctor Who, Collision and Material Girl, and in 2011 she played the lead role in the movie Fast Girls (also starring Noel Clarke and Bradley James).

We think that Crichlow would be perfect for the role of Arianne Martell, who first appears in the fourth novel, A Feast for Crows. Arianne is the Princess of Dorne, and a warrior in her own right (although not as fierce as her cousins the Sand Snakes). She’s one of the most intriguing new POV characters introduced in the later books, and Crichlow would be able to bring both a toughness and a vulnerability to the part.

Dame Judi Dench

Judi Dench’s career began in theater, where she gained recognition through iconic Shakespearean roles such as Ophelia (Hamlet) and Lady MacBeth (Macbeth). She came into prominence with international audiences when she was cast as M in the James Bond 1995 film, Goldeneye–a role that she would reprise in six other Bond films. Ironically, after gaining notoriety for her Shakespearean theater work, she earned her first Academy Award in 1998 playing Queen Elizabeth I in the Best Picture film Shakespeare in Love.

At 78 years old, Dame Judi doesn’t look to be stopping anytime soon, and we’d love to see another actress of her caliber join the Game of Thrones cast. Her natural, commanding presence would really work for Lady Maege Mormont; not only can we imagine her holding her own as the sister to our other favorite Mormont, the Old Bear, but we can totally see her as the fearsome She-bear leader of Bear Island. Plus, with so many of our Northern favorites dead from the Red Wedding, it would really lift our spirits to see Judi Dench put on some battle armor and kick ass.

Sir Ben Kingsley

Like so many British actors, Ben Kingsley began his career in theater, but he shot to fame in the 1982 film Ghandi, where he won an Oscar for his portrayal of the titular Mohandas Ghandi. He later co-starred in Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award-winning film, Schindler’s List, and has most recently been seen in Iron Man 3.

The 69 year-old Sir Ben has a knack for playing cautious, calculating characters that still carry a weight of authority about them. We’d love to see him play Princess Arianne’s father, the mysterious and strategic Prince of Dorne, Doran Martell, in the upcoming seasons of Game of Thrones.

Sir Kenneth Branagh

Kenneth Branagh is perhaps best known for the numerous Shakespearean film adaptations he’s starred in, including 1989’s Henry V, for which he was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Director. Younger audiences probably know the 52 year-old actor best as Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and his more recent accomplishments include an Academy Award nomination in 2011 for his performance as Laurence Olivier in the film My Week with Marilyn. Like his fellow knight, Ben Kingsley, Sir Kenneth also has ties to Marvel, as he directed the 2011 film, Thor.

Branagh has an incredible presence on stage and screen, and he’d definitely need to be brought into Game of Thrones as a character with a lot of authority and sense of self-worth. We see him as a possible Victarion Greyjoy, one of Theon’s uncles who becomes a POV character in A Feast For Crows. Victarion is a fearsome man, and some might say that Branagh is too soft for the role – but they’re thinking of his Gilderoy, not his Henry V. Victarion is the Stannis of the Greyjoy brothers – the strongest and most solid choice as a leader, but ultimately not the favorite of their people.

Ralph Fiennes

A brilliant English actor, Ralph Fiennes’ career really took off when he played the central villain in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, though he will probably always be cemented in fandom minds as the demented and Draco-hugging Lord Voldemort. And though we’re sure Mr. Fiennes is a very nice man, he does have a knack for creeping us out with his portrayals of intense, cunning and terrifying psychopaths.

Fiennes is the perfect Euron Greyjoy. Strong, commanding, but with very little compassion. He rises up after the fall of his brother Balon (Theon’s father), and strikes out viciously against anyone who opposes him. Fiennes’ powerful presence coupled with his ability to be terrifying without raising his voice would bring a very memorable Euron Greyjoy to life on screen.

Sir Michael Caine

At 80 years old, Michael Caine has appeared in over a hundred films in his lifetime and is still going at it. Renowned for his Cockney accent that broke social class barriers, he received an Academy Award in 1986 for Hannah and Her Sisters, and his second Oscar in 1999 for Cider House Rules.

He cemented his status as a cultural icon with fans everywhere when he played Batman’s loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. And speaking of Caine’s history in mentoring young heroes, we think that Sir Michael’s acting range would be well-utilized in the role of the Kindly Man as someone who can seem simultaneously sweet and terrifyingly sinister when teaching Arya.

Dame Helen Mirren

Though she began her acting career with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Helen Mirren has been playing up her sensual on-screen persona in films since the ’60s. At 67 years old, Dame Helen is still as saucy as ever, and her unique claim to fame is that she is the only actress to have played both of the Queen Elizabeths, for which she won an Emmy and an Oscar respectively.

Dame Helen has natural Lannister good-looks, and the intelligence and sass to play one of our favorite Lannister ladies, Tywin’s sister, Genna. We’d love to see Helen Mirren bossing everyone around at Casterly Rock, and the way their reputation is going, the Lannister family could do with a little bit of classing up right about now.

Sir Anthony Hopkins

Anthony Hopkins is a 75 years old Welsh actor best known for his iconic and Oscar-winning role as Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs. A gifted mimic, Sir Anthony would have no trouble spicing up his little corner of Westeros on Game of Thrones.

We think that it would be fun to see the accomplished actor have a go at playing Queen Selyse’s uncle Axell Florent, the deluded, tenacious scumbag who calls himself ‘Hand of the Queen.’ An actor of Sir Anthony’s caliber might have a shot at turning the sleazy and scheming Florent into a worthy villain.
