With the new television season slowly encroaching, we take a look at the television shows premiering this week, including Red Band Society and Madam Secretary.

There are some returning shows – New Girl, The Mindy Project and The Good Wife – but more notably, newcomers Red Band Society and Madam Secretary bow this week. Which shows will you be tuning into?

This is the first in a series to be posted every Monday for the next few weeks while new shows premiere throughout the month. Below, we share why we are excited to finally settle back into our fall television routines.

‘New Girl’ (FOX)
September 16, 9 p.m.

Okay, let’s be honest. New Girl season 3 wasn’t the best and it definitely wasn’t as good as the first two seasons. Liz Meriwether has chopped that up to not knowing how to deal with Nick and Jess being in a relationship. Well, now they’re broken up!

That means that we can look forward to more adorkable dating mishaps with Jess. And hopefully we’ll see Nick getting back into a bromance with Schmidt, Coach, and Winston.

Speaking of Coach, I’m beyond elated that he’s signed on to be a regular cast member. If there was anything good about season 3 it was Coach. And we can’t wait to see what else he’ll get up to in season 4. Maybe Coach can have some romance of his own?

Another thing we’re looking forward to is the ever-growing amazing guest stars. So far Julian Morris, Alan Ritchson, and Reid Scott have signed on as love interests for Jess. What we’re really excited for, however, is the amazing women appearing on the show.

I’ll admit it – I watched 7th Heaven back in the day so I’ve been a Jessica Biel fan for a long time. So I’m expecting her return to TV to be epic. Especially since she’s playing a “mean girl” type.

Just as exciting will be seeing the amazingly funny Kaitlin Olson on New Girl. Plus her storyline sounds genius. I can’t wait to see Bob with his young bride-to-be who should also know some awesome stories about Jess and Cece from high school. Flashbacks anyone?

‘The Mindy Project’ (FOX)
September 16, 9:30 p.m.

It’s safe to say we are very eager to see the season 3 premiere of The Mindy Project this week. Who can forget Mindy and Danny’s romantic reconnection at the top of the Empire State Building during the season 2 finale? Now that they finally seem settled into their relationship, we will get to see them conquer the world together! Or at least, navigate the tricky waters that come with being an official couple.

The first test we know Mindy will have to endure? Meeting Danny Castellano’s mother, played by Rhea Perlman. In other non-relationship news, we know Shonda Rhimes will be playing herself in an episode, with most of the men in the show decked out in Dartmouth gear. Hm, consider us intrigued!

‘Red Band Society’ (FOX)
September 17, 9 p.m.

While there are many old favorites coming back to prime time this fall, one new show I’m excited to check out is Fox’s Red Band Society. The new drama is set to showcase teens in a new light as it focuses on a group of youths living with a variety of severe illnesses in a hospital.

With an interesting premise that one early sees on prime time and star power in the form of Academy Award winning actress Octavia Spencer, I’m definitely excited to see if the pilot for the series lives up to the intriguing trailer that’s been floating around for the past few months!

‘Madam Secretary’ (CBS)
Sunday, September 21, 8 p.m.

CBS’ new show about a woman who suddenly finds herself accepting the position of Secretary Of Defense is set to premiere this Sunday and, like many others who love a good political drama, I’m intrigued to see if Madam Secretary proves itself worthy of keeping up through the rest of its inaugural season. On the acting front, it’ll also be exiting to see not only how veteran actress Tea Leoni does on her big return to television, but also how newcomers like off Broadway actor Eric Bergen (Jersey Boys) fair in their supporting roles.

‘The Good Wife’ (CBS) Sunday, September 21, 9 p.m.

When it comes to dramatic court-room shows, this one takes the cake. In The Good Wife season 6, we’ll see more of the fallout from Will’s untimely death, and Diane Lockhart joining the Florrick Agos team (not a spoiler since this has been advertised quite a bit). The show is also bursting at the seams with drama, both in and out of the court room. But let’s be real, The Good Wife quickly realized it’s strength was in the character’s dramatic stories, not in the case of the week.

Taye Diggs will be joining the show as lawyer Dean Levine-Wilkins for at least five episodes. According to show creator Robert King, he tells Entertainment Weekly, “he’s one half of a comic culture clash” as he heralds from the New York law offices. If for nothing else, watch The Good Wife to get your Matt Czrucky fix (that is, until October 1.)
