The last few weeks have been rough for avid TV viewers – so many shows are over (or about to be) we hardly know what to do with ourselves! Keep yourself sane for a little while longer with some good movies starring your favorite TV actors.

‘Waitress’ (2007)

A quirky dramedy starring Keri Russell (The Americans) and Nathan Fillion (Castle) that flew under the radar when it first came out, but I found it surprisingly enjoyable. Russell plays Jenna, an unhappy wife with a passion for pies whose pregnancy forces her to finally follow her dreams. Fillion charms as Dr. Pomatter, Jenna’s hilariously awkward physician. Despite being an ultimately uplifting story, expect some serious downers along the way. Co-stars Suburgatory’s Cheryl Hines and Jeremy Sisto, as well as the one and only Andy Griffith.

‘Ten Inch Hero’ (2007)

A great independent film starring Elisabeth Harnois (CSI) and Jensen Ackles (Supernatural). Alright guys, hear me out. I thought that this movie looked ridiculous and I resisted the suggestion on my Netflix queue for months and months. But I am so glad that I eventually gave in because I loved this movie. There are several plots going on that all focus around the employees of a sandwich shop in Santa Cruz, California. Give this a try and I promise you won’t regret it. Co-stars Sean Patrick Flanery, Clea DuVall, and Danneel Harris (who later married Jensen).

‘Gigantic’ (2009)

There is no denying that this movie is weird. But it is awesome weird. No surprise considering that is stars Zooey Deschanel (New Girl). The main character Brian, played by Paul Dano, begins an unconventional relationship with Harriet (Deschanel) which complicates his desire to adopt a child from China. This movie will have you laughing out loud as well as feeling really uncomfortable, but in a good way. Co-stars John Goodman, Zach Galifianakis, and the legendary Ed Asner.

‘Safety Not Guaranteed’ (2012)

This movie is absolutely and completely unique. Jaded magazine intern Darius, played by Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) accompanies writer Jeff (Jake Johnson from New Girl) to investigate a bizarre classified request for a time-travel partner. What they find in the course of this investigation is not what you might expect. Co-stars Mark Duplass and Kristen Bell.

‘New Amsterdam’ (2008)

This is the only series I am recommending on this list because I just can’t stop myself. The premise of this show was amazing, yet it got cancelled after a mere eight episodes. Starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) as John Amsterdam, it follows a homicide detective who has been immortal since the 1600s. He is cursed to never age until he finds his soulmate. The most interesting aspect of the show were the flashbacks which showed Amsterdam meeting amazing historical figures, sometimes turning out to actually BE famous historical figures. Co-stars Zuleikha Robinson (Homeland) and Alexie Gilmore.

‘Bedrooms & Hallways’ (1998)

Before they were Lucius and Mark Antony, before they were a trauma surgeon and a serial killer, Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy) and James Purefoy (Following) teamed up for this crazy comedy that explores the ever-changing nature of sexuality and friendship. A must-see of gay cinema, this movie will have you laughing and crying. Co-stars Hugo Weaving, Tom Hollander, and Jennifer Ehle.

‘Away We Go’ (2009)

A beautiful story about the pitfalls of parenting and raising a family in a world with so much diversity. John Krasinski (The Office) and Maya Rudolph star as parents-to-be visiting their friends and family on the verge of starting a new phase of their relationship. Co-stars Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), Maggie Gyllenhaal, and comedian Jim Gaffigan.

‘Death at a Funeral’ (2007)

Hijinks ensue as brothers Daniel (Matthew Macfadyen) and Robert (Sherlock’s Rupert Graves) come together for their father’s funeral. The arrival of the mysterious Peter, played by Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) raises questions about who their father really was in this hilarious black comedy. Also stars Alan Tudyk (Firefly) and Keeley Hawes (Mcfadyen’s wife and partner in Spooks).

‘Sky High’ (2005)

Already missing Jim Rash (Community) as the outrageous Dean Pelton of Greendale Community College? Check him out as the principal of a high school for budding superheroes in this ridiculous but fun family movie. This movie has a ton of talent, including Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, Dave Foley, Danielle Panabaker, Steven Strait (Magic City), Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman), Bruce Campbell, and Cloris Leachman.

‘Christopher and His Kind’ (2011)

Based on a true story, Matt Smith (Doctor Who) plays aspiring writer Christopher in 1930s Germany. There are strange characters abound at Christopher’s boarding house and he is introduced to Berlin’s gay underground. A story of love and loss when the world was on the brink of World War II. Fun fact: The BBC forbid Matt Smith from appearing naked in this film due to their interest in casting him as the Doctor. Co-stars Toby Jones and Imogen Poots.
