The Teen Wolf season 5 trailer debuted yesterday, so today we’re breaking down the top moments and analyzing them in excruciating detail.

The Teen Wolf season 5 trailer offered us our first solid look at the upcoming season, and suffice it to say we’re thrilled with what we’ve seen so far. It looks like an explosive good time, with plenty of mystery, bloodshed, and drama — which is exactly what we would expect from this show.

Below, you’ll find our top 10 favorite moments from the trailer, plus an analysis summing up our feelings and posing theories for season 5’s main plot. Afterward, hit the comments and let us know what you think!

1. Bloody hands

One of the first shots of the trailer is a pair of bloody hands. It’s likely these belong to a werewolf who may be having some trouble controlling their transformation. In season 3, we saw Scott struggling with changing at school, and the way he stopped himself was by digging his claws into the palms of his hands. The pain grounded him, and he was able to stay human.

We’re not 100% certain whose hands these belong to, but out of the various possibilities, we think Liam is most likely. He’s the youngest werewolf in the pack, and he could still be having trouble staying human around the full moon. We like the consistency of having the werewolves struggle with the urge to transform, and it’s nice to see that carry over into season 5, even if it isn’t a major plot point like it has been in the past.

2. The clock

This clock shows up in several instances throughout the trailer. At first glance, it seems unimportant — but then the second hand starts jumping around all over the place. It’s certainly creepy, and makes us think something supernatural is definitely happening here, but could it have more of a significance?

In the trailer, someone says, “Tell me, Lydia. It started just after you began senior year. What happened?” Later, the same man says, “Tell me what happened. What happened to your friends?” This might indicate some sort of time jump within the show, or a flashback to what happened to Scott and his pack previously. Could the jumping clock be any indication of someone messing with time?

3. Lydia is institutionalized

Speaking of Lydia, a good portion of the trailer focuses on her being institutionalized. It seems as though she’s in Eichen House, but is she in there by force or did she volunteer? Are her Banshee powers driving her crazy, or is she trying to solve another mystery?

Throughout the trailer, we see her either wandering the halls of the institution, or looking dazed and afraid as she sees flashes of an accident — is that Stiles in an overturned Roscoe the Jeep? Her powers seem to be growing even stronger (we’ll get to that more later), and we know from Meredith in particular how that can mess with your mind.

4. Theo

We’re introduced to our first new character of the season, who also happens to have quite a large role this year, from what we can tell anyway. His name is Theo (played by Cody Christian), and he’s a lone wolf who has wandered back to Beacon Hills. He asks Scott if he remembers him, and the way he smirks throughout the trailer makes us feel uneasy about his intentions.

It seems Stiles has similar thoughts. He grows increasingly more upset at Scott and his penchant for trusting everyone. Scott wonders if he should let Theo into his pack, and Theo reminds him that lone wolves usually don’t survive on their own. If Scott lets him in, though, could Theo ruin the whole dynamic of the pack?

5. Experimentation

The character above is also a large part of the trailer. He appears to be a werewolf, but he has a deformed hand and is seen attacking our heroes. We first meet him in this dungeon of a lab, which could possibly be in Eichen House’s basement, and see him later on wreaking havoc.

We’re not entirely sure what’s going on with him, but considering he’s surrounded by a ton of blood and we have some villains called doctors, we have to wonder if someone is experimenting on supernatural creatures. That would certainly make for a thrilling plot line. Perhaps this big guy is an antagonist against his will.

6. Dr. Valack

Ah, good ol’ creepy Dr. Valack, back on our screens. This time, we hope to learn a lot more about him. In the trailer, we see Stiles and Lydia talking to Dr. Valack. At the end of season 4, we saw Peter being shoved into the same cell as the doctor, but he’s nowhere to be seen in the trailer. Is Peter still alive, and if so, where is he?

Dr. Valack’s memorable, er, addition is his third eye. It allows him to see certain things, but it also allows him to mess with people’s minds. If Lydia and Stiles are meeting with him, they must be truly desperate for some answers. Hopefully they play it safe and don’t let the doctor out of his cage!

7. Doctors

Speaking of these mysterious and horribly creepy doctors, we see them throughout the trailer. Mostly they just lurk, but that’s enough to frighten us. They’re wearing long leather jackets and definitely have some sort of steampunk vibe going on. They almost seem mechanical, but we just don’t have a lot of information on them yet. Except they can crawl sideways along the walls. Did we mention they’re creepy?

Another moment in the trailer we want to point out is the brief glimpse of a tank with someone inside of it. We can’t tell who it is or what is going on here, but perhaps it’s the big guy from earlier on. If these doctors are doing experiments, maybe this is one of their subjects in preparation.

8. Parrish

When we last left Parrish, he found out he was a supernatural creature — but what kind, he hasn’t yet discovered. Lydia was sitting down with him in the final moments of the season 4 finale, and we’re hoping we can figure out what exactly he is before too much time goes by. Either way, it looks like he’s definitely in the mix of the action more than he was last year.

We see the large man with the deformed hand smash through a wall and pick Parrish up by the neck. Who knows what Parrish was doing down in such a creepy place, but hopefully he can get out of this jam — or Scott and his friends can rescue him. Then again, Parrish survived certain death before. Maybe he can do it again?

9. Tracy

Another newcomer to the show is Tracy (played by Kelsey Chow). We don’t know anything else about her either, but from the trailer it’s obvious she’s a werewolf, too. We see her attacking a man, with a spray of blood on a window being the result of their confrontation. Is Tracy also an antagonist, or is this man someone who has done her wrong?

Fans of Teen Wolf know that each year plenty of new characters walk into the town of Beacon Hills, but not all of them stick around. And not all of them make it out alive. Perhaps Tracy will be the victim of one of the doctors, or maybe Scott and his pack will need to find a way to stop her before she does too much damage.

10. Lydia’s powers

Our last moment from the trailer is actually our favorite. We see Lydia in the hospital, where an orderly or a doctor is seen approaching her. Her arms are outstretched, and we see her actually throw him back — whether by her scream or some other power she’s developing, we’re not sure. There’s a ring of white that comes out from her form, which could be a sound wave. The light bursts and the person opposite her is flung away.

Lydia’s powers have developed slowly over the course of the last few seasons, and we still don’t know much about what she can do. In season 4 we saw her hone her abilities to predict death and help save her friends from imminent danger. Here, it looks like her powers are getting more physical rather than mental, and we are so ready to see her kick some butt.
