Teen Wolf season 4, episode 4, “The Benefactor,” has just finished airing. Our recap explains everything that went down in Beacon Hills this week.

Teen Wolf season 4, episode 4, titled “The Benefactor,” begins with the officers of Beacon Hills investigating the wendigo’s death. The Sheriff calls in his “expert” — Derek Hale.

Meanwhile, Stiles and Scott talk about the little problem of Liam… who is currently duct taped in Scott’s bathtub. When they bring him into the bedroom to talk, he starts to cry as Scott tells him what’s going on with him. But don’t believe those crocodile tears! As the boys cut him loose, he attacks them and escapes.

At Derek’s loft, Peter gets attacked by The Mute, who tells him Derek is next on his list.

While Stiles and Malia inspect the chains she’ll have to wear for the full moon tonight, Lydia looks over her mysterious so-called math notes and thinks they’re a code for something. As Mrs. Martin graces our screens once again, she tells Lydia the ground rules for the lake house, which the gang seems to be using as a place to hole up for the full moon.

Meanwhile, Stiles and Scott are still trying to talk to Liam about the bite he received. As Liam starts experiencing the turn during school, Scott does a Derek by disappearing in the blink of an eye. Oh, and he tries to do the speech, too. It doesn’t work out well.

The group elects Kira to invite Liam to the “party” in order to get him to the lake house where they can chain him up for his protection. Derek heals Peter, who tells him about The Mute. And Stiles tells Scott why Liam got kicked out of his last school — it was because he has serious anger issues. Not great for someone who’s turning into a werewolf.

Derek and Sheriff Stilinski’s conversation at the station is interrupted by Parrish, but it turns out that the deputy knows the type of tomahawk that was used by The Mute, as well as what the communicator used to be used for. They’re both military.

Back at the lake house, Liam starts turning, but he still doesn’t believe what Scott and the others are telling him. As Liam and Malia start to lose control, a bunch of Liam’s friends (and his friends’ friends) show up at the “party.” Lydia is tasked with distracting them.

Back at the Sheriff’s station, Parrish gets an IP address from the communicator and they start to receive messages from someone called the Benefactor. It seems as though money has exchanged hands, which means The Mute is not just a killer, he’s an assassin.

Liam and Malia are tied up, but both are still struggling with turning. Meanwhile, the kids at the party get into everything at Lydia’s lake house and order alcohol. The guy who shows up to deliver the keg is actually a werewolf, and as he’s leaving, he struggles under the full moon’s spell.

But that doesn’t last long. He comes to grips with his transformation, but before he can do much else, Garrett’s girlfriend, Violet, beheads him and then returns to the party. Oh, and Garrett gets a text from the Benefactor saying money has been transferred into his account.

We certainly didn’t see that coming!

Mason and Lydia meet while he’s looking for Liam, and he helps her when she spills wine on the carpet. She’s upset because they’re trying to sell the lake house, and it’s supposed to stay in perfect condition. We only got a few minutes with Mason so far, but we really like his honest and friendly demeanor. Hopefully that’s not just a ploy.

As Mason leaves to get her some cleaning products, Lydia discovers a soundproof room in the lake house, and she’s drawn to a record player. As she plays the record, she begins to hear voices and faces come out of the wall in front of her. Does this mean that Lydia’s banshee powers run in her family?

Scott and Kira bond while at the boat house, but that ends quickly enough when Liam breaks free. Malia also struggles with her bonds, but as she tries to get free, Stiles explains to her that he knows how she feels because he remembers everything he did as the nogitsune. But he tells her that control is overrated, and that is enough to get her to come back to herself.

Sheriff Stilinski and Derek explore the school, but something is not right. There’s a trap set for them, but they see it before the bomb blows. However, The Mute shows up and they barely dive out of the way of his tomahawk in time.

Scott goes after Liam, but Liam turns around and attacks Scott. Luckily for the new Alpha, Chris shows up and saves him from his beta with a simple, “I got your text.”

As Stilinski and Derek take down The Mute and go to arrest him, Peter interjects and kills him instead.

Chris advises Scott to start using his own words on Liam, and that’s exactly what he does. Kira, meanwhile, finds Lydia, who says the record allows her to hear the key to break the code. And guess what the key is? “Allison.” They discover a hit list of supernatural creatures.
