Teen Wolf season 4, episode 3, “Muted,” has just finished airing. Our recap explains everything that went down in Beacon Hills this week.

Teen Wolf season 4, episode 3, titled “Muted,” begins with a new character named Shawn stepping out of his house at night calling for Willow. When he doesn’t find his pet, he goes back inside, though something seems off. No one is answering him, and it’s obvious he has a strange feeling.

He finds Willow, his cat, underneath his bed, but she’s covered in blood. After that, he hears his family screaming as they’re murdered. We see that the killer is the man without a mouth, but before he can finish off Shawn, the boy escapes through the window.

In the next scene, Braeden is discussing the price it will take for Derek and Peter to hire her to find Kate and not turn her over to the Calaveras. Meanwhile, Peter has a little bit of a breakdown about his total lack of money and the prospect of — shudder — getting a job.

Lacrosse makes a grand entrance in this episode, and we finally get a look at Liam, the new student who will be giving Scott a run for his money on the field.

That’s not the only problem the boys are facing, though, as both are having money problems. When we cut to the hospital — which is also having financial issues — Shawn shows up bloody and traumatized. Oh, and Kira’s parents want to move back to New York, she and Scott don’t quite know where their relationship stands, and Malia is having some serious trouble in school.

The creators behind Teen Wolf weren’t kidding when they said this season would be focusing more on the human problems of the show. But that’s not to say there isn’t still a huge supernatural aspect here, as we see the man without a mouth feeding himself through a tube and staring at a computer screen, which is filled with an incomprehensible sequence of numbers, letters, and symbols.

As Scott worries about not automatically being team captain for the lacrosse team this year, we see him and Stiles go head-to-head with Liam. Things come to an abrupt halt when Scott accidentally injures the freshman and he has to be taken to the hospital.

One good thing that came out of these tryouts, however, is that it seems as though Coach wants Kira to join the team too!

Back at Derek’s loft, Braeden tells him she knows what he wants from Kate — that he wants what she stole from him, which was his true nature, as was reflected in his eyes. Derek gives her a week to find Kate.

Scott and Kira finally have the conversation they’ve been meaning to have, and Scott apologizes for kissing her like he did earlier in the day. He leaves, but quickly comes back, saying that he’s not actually sorry. They kiss, and it’s an adorable moment that obviously means a lot to Kira.

The episode turns sinister, however, when Lydia shows up at Shawn’s house and Deputy Parrish finds her there. The faces in the wall make a reappearance, and Lydia finds a secret door. The two of them go in, finding a bunch of bodies hanging up in freezer room.

Kira uses the For Sale sign for katana practice, while Stiles helps Malia study. Malia explains her deal with the highlighters (which adorably reflects how Stiles uses the strings on his board for the mysteries around Beacon Hills), and when Stiles tries to help her with math using Lydia’s notes, he realizes Lydia hadn’t been taking notes after all. Instead, her notebook is filled with the same combination of letters, numbers, and symbols that was on the computer screen the man without a mouth was looking at.

Lydia calls Scott in a panic, telling him he has to find Shawn. When Mama McCall goes into his room, she finds Shawn eating the officer that was stationed outside his room. Shawn attacks Melissa, but Scott comes to the rescue. Unfortunately, Liam is right in the middle of the action and gets taken by Shawn.

Scott finds them on the roof and tries to get Shawn to stop what he’s doing. We find out Shawn is a Wendigo, and as he tries to attack Liam, Scott stops him, though Liam goes over the side of the roof. He hangs on, but just barely, and Scott has to bite him in order to keep a grip on him. Shawn is killed by the man without a mouth, who walks away without harming Scott, allowing Scott to pull Liam to safety.

The episode ends with Scott looking down on Liam, who’s yelling in pain from the bite on his arm.
