Derek is no longer an Alpha, and that means he’ll be struggling with what to do next. What purpose will his life take on now?

In a new interview with WetPaint, Tyler Hoechlin (Derek) talks about the impact losing his Alpha powers has on his character, and what Derek will choose to do with his life now.

“After these last couple seasons, Derek really felt like he was the one who was meant to be an Alpha,” Hoechlin tells WetPaint. “He thought that was his role, and he wanted to have a pack, that feeling of family again.”

Derek’s loss of Alpha powers wasn’t involuntary, however. He chose to give up his role as Alpha in order to save his sister’s life. Cora survived, and although Derek is now a Beta and therefore a weaker form of werewolf, he learned that power isn’t everything. It was a hard lesson to learn, but one that Derek definitely needed to experience.

“I think he’s finally realized that that’s not his calling, that’s not who he is supposed to be,” Hoechlin continues. “That is Scott’s destiny; Scott is that natural leader. But, I think Derek is kind of realizing that he can still have that idea of family with Scott and his group. He can still have those people in his life without having to be the Alpha. He can serve a different purpose. He’s just confused on what the purpose is.”

We love the idea that Derek will finally be accepting of Scott. We’re still not sure if he’ll be accepting him as an Alpha, but we’re quite content with Derek making good on his promise that he and Scott are brothers now.

Teen Wolf season 3, episode 16, titled “Illuminated,” airs tonight on MTV at 10 p.m. Hopefully we’ll learn what exactly it was that Derek saw while he communicated with his deceased mother, along with a hint at what his true purpose could be this season.

Are you coming to terms with the fact that Derek is now a Beta on ‘Teen Wolf’?
