Teen Wolf season 3, episode 20, titled “Echo House,” begins with Sheriff Stilinski driving Stiles to Eichen House, the mental institution. Scott shows up, and it’s clear he doesn’t want Stiles in there because he won’t be able to protect him. But Stiles says it’s his decision, and if they can’t figure out how to get the nogitsune out of him, Scott will need to make sure Stiles never leaves Eichen House.

When they first arrive, Stiles sees one of the other patients commit suicide. He also sees the nogitsune. He wants to call someone to tell them about it, but the worker who takes him to his room won’t allow him to.

It turns out that Deaton and Argent were working together to get the letharia vulpina lichen from the last episode. Deaton says the effects will only last a few days, and then the nogitsune will be back to full-strength. In the meantime, they need to find a scroll that will tell them how to exorcise the nogitsune from Stiles. Allison thinks she knows where it is.

Stiles meets two new characters fairly quickly. Oliver is his roommate, and when they first come face-to-face, Oliver is strapped to his bed. All in all, though, he seems fairly jovial at first glance.

Meredith, on the other hand, is talking into a dead phone and says, “One of them is standing right behind me.” Does she know what nogitsunes are?

We also see Malia again, though she’s less than enthusiastic about seeing Stiles, and punches him in the face. Ms. Morrell, the guidance counselor for Beacon Hills High, shows up and begins to conduct a session with several patients.

Derek and Chris are still in jail, and they discuss Stiles and the possibility of what they might have to do to stop the nogitsune. Chris talks about Berzerkers, which are people who use animal skins in rituals and literally become crazed and animalistic. In the end, you have to kill them because they are no longer themselves.

When Derek asks if Chris would feel remorse putting down Stiles, Chris says he would. But he also says he wouldn’t regret killing a nogitsune.

Stiles keeps seeing the nogitsune in bandaged form while he’s in his session with the others and Ms. Morrell. She pulls him aside and we see that he has marks called the Lichtenberg Figure. These are the result of the letharia vulpina Stiles was injected with.

Morrell tells Stiles that when the marks are gone, the lichen will have worn off, and the nogitsune will have returned. Morrell gives him pills to keep him awake, saying that he’s more vulnerable when he’s asleep. She also tells him that if his friends don’t figure out what’s wrong with him by the time the marks go away, she will give him an injection that will kill him.

Stiles wants to get into the basement of the facility because he knows he’s been down there before. However, he has to steal the keys from the head orderly. Stiles and Malia come up with a plan. She wants to learn how to turn back into a coyote, where life is much simpler. Stiles knows someone who can help her — probably Derek or Scott — and asks for her help getting the keys in return.

Away from Eichen House, Scott, Allison, Lydia, and the twins work together to figure out how to break into an armored car in order to get to the evidence from Katashi’s body. They’re certain he had the scroll on him when he died.

Malia gets the keys for Stiles, but he’s caught by the head orderly before he can get into the basement. The orderly takes him to the “quiet room,” and gives him a sedative. It looks like Stiles has no choice but to sleep now.

Kira shows up at Scott’s, saying she knows how to wield a katana. She’s been picking it up incredibly fast and can’t explain why. Scott lets her come along.

Stiles is in a dream with the nogitsune, but Malia breaks into his room and wakes him up. That’s when she tells him that there is another way into the basement — they must go through the closed unit, which is where they keep the worst of the patients.

Meanwhile, Stiles’ friends are having a tough time getting the scroll. Kinkade, Katashi’s former body guard, shows up to take it, and the kids must fight him off in order to get it and save Stiles.

Chris meets with what he thinks is his lawyer, but it’s really the leader of the group of hunters from South America. She tells Chris she doesn’t like that he’s changed his code, and also apparently wants to talk about Allison.

Malia takes Stiles to the basement, and they look at the symbol for self that’s carved on the wall. They also look through papers that are stored down there, but they can’t find anything useful. After Stiles and Malia kiss and have sex, Malia realizes that the wall with the symbol on it is hollow.

Back at the armored truck, it looks like Kinkade is going to get away with the scroll, but the twins show up and turn the tide. Scott must tell him to stop before they kill Kinkade, saying that they’re there to save a life, not take one. Scott takes the scroll, and the group leaves.

When Stiles breaks through the wall, they find the body of the nogitsune behind it. Malia takes out a piece of paper from his satchel, and when Stiles looks at it, he tells her he needs to get it to Scott. Unfortunately, that’s exactly when Oliver shows up and tasers both of them, while also injecting Malia.

Oliver restrains Stiles, but he also coughs up blood and flies, and we realize that the nogitsune has gotten a hold of him, too. The nogitsune tells Oliver to start with Malia, telling Stiles he’ll let her go if he lets the dark kitsune in again. Stiles agrees.

Back at the vet’s office, Deaton reads the scroll, but all it says is that the way to save Stiles is to change the body of the person hosting the nogitsune. Scott is the one to realize what that means: Stiles must be turned into a werewolf.

At the end of the episode, Malia leaves Eichen House in search of Scott. Morrell tells her where to find him, and as Malia leaves, she looks up and her eyes turn blue. Did she ever have trouble turning back into a coyote in the first place?
