MTV is backing out of its usual coverage of New Year’s celebrations in Times Square, instead giving Teen Wolf fans a countdown to new footage for season 5.

According to Variety, this change-up has been a long time coming and may be due to budget constraints and low viewership during such programs. Last year, MTV kept its New Year’s coverage to a minimum, opting for an hour-long special with hosts Victoria Justice and Charlamagne. This year, they’re scrapping it altogether.

Instead of joining the rest of the world in New York to witness the ball drop, they’ll be playing back-to-back episodes of Ridiculousness, a half-hour comedy that premiered in 2011. The show gathers viral videos from the internet and presents them to a panel of hosts, often containing at least one celebrity.

At midnight, MTV will premiere the six-minute cold open for Teen Wolf season 5, episode 11, “The Last Chimera.”

After that, the cable network will continue showing Ridiculousness until 7 a.m. on January 1.

Teen Wolf season 5B will premiere on a new day and at a new time at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 5. They will lead into the premiere episode of The Shannara Chronicles season 1, which will take the 10:00 p.m. slot on Tuesdays.

Last week, we broke down a new trailer for Teen Wolf season 5, where we talked about a new shot of what could possibly be one of the Navajo skinwalkers that Kira and her mother Noshiko will be coming up against while they journey to a New Mexico desert to get Kira’s fox spirit under control.
