Teen Wolf season 5, episode 13, “Codominance,” airs tonight, and Kira will find herself being tested in the desert.

The second half of Teen Wolf season 5 is momentarily focusing on Scott building his pack from the ground up after everyone went their separate ways. Tonight’s episode will focus on Kira, who left town with her mother in order to figure out how to control the kitsune fox spirit inside of her. It won’t be an easy journey.

Kira and Noshiko will find themselves in the New Mexico desert facing Navajo Skinwalkers. The three women, dressed in animal hides, rise from the ground to test Kira. As they say in the promo video, if she’s too far gone to help, she will stay with them forever. Watch below.

It’s going to be great to see Kira back after two episodes without her, and especially with a story so focused on her abilities, which we still don’t know a whole lot about. Hopefully Noshiko will provide new information that allows Kira (and us!) to better understand the kitsune spirit.

It’s interesting that Kira will be facing off with the Skinwalkers, as the kitsune is a legend originating from Japan. The skinwalkers, though there are many iterations, will be of Navajo origin, according to Executive Producer Jeff Davis. In Navajo legend, Skinwalkers are a type of witch who can take the form of an animal or another person. However, Teen Wolf always does an excellent job of putting their own spin on mythology, so we’ll have no idea what rules these mystical beings will have to abide by in the show’s universe.

In trailers showing footage from the entire season, we see Kira will not only be facing the Skinwalkers, but the oni instead. From season 3B, the oni were warrior spirits used by the nogitsune to carry out its nefarious deeds. How the Skinwalkers will conjure the oni — if they are the ones to conjure the oni — remains to be seen.

Teen Wolf season 5, episode 13, “Codominance,” airs tonight on MTV at 9:00 p.m. ahead of The Shannara Chronicles. Check back tonight for our analysis of Teen Wolf’s episode, as well as coverage of Shannara!
