The live action teddy bear comedy Ted, marking Seth MacFarlane’s directorial debut, is just as enjoyable following repeated viewings and the new special features.

We were huge fans of Ted when it debuted in theaters this past June. We couldn’t help but laugh uncontrollably during many scenes, and the teddy bear himself is downright adorable. Seth MacFarlane’s crude and witty humor finally took the leap from television (Family Guy, American Dad) to the big screen and paid off in a big way. The film grossed over $500 million worldwide with $218 million of that coming from domestic ticket sales, making it the eighth highest-grossing film of the year in the United States.

If you enjoyed it in theaters, you’re going to love it at home. The Blu-ray features an unrated version of the film which theoretically includes additional crude humor, though to be honest we were hard pressed to spot scenes that we didn’t notice in the theatrical release.

Found on both the Blu-ray and DVD are a gag reel, a commentary, and a few featurettes. The latter offer nice inside looks at how they designed Ted’s appearance, how MacFarlane would work off camera but with the actors within the scene, and more.

Blu-ray-only special feature include deleted scenes, alternate takes, and a featurette called Teddy Bear Scuffle. The Scuffle segment takes a look at designing the fight scene between John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) and Ted (voice by MacFarlane). We see the lengths they went to make the fight scene as real as possible. For example, we learn about special editing techniques used to make it look like Ted packed a hard punch.

There were many deleted scenes, but we didn’t think any of them were good enough to be included in the final film. The real hilarity arrives in the alternate takes. These were additional punch lines MacFarlane voiced while shooting scenes with Wahlberg. They were sometimes a lot dirtier or controversial than jokes that made the final film. They’re classic MacFarlane humor that you sometimes see in Family Guy.

Ted was a hit in theaters and a great movie for your home collection. It’s perfect for a night in with friends. We personally will be giving this one repeated views. It’ll hold us over until the rumored Ted sequel.

By the way: Universal continues to update Ted‘s Facebook page with hilarious new photos of the bear and captions. We highly recommend reading through ’em.
