Team StarKid have announced Starship: Requiem, a one-off staged reading for the sequel to their 2011 original musical Starship.

Starship – StarKid’s 2011 original musical and the group’s first venture as a functioning theater company outside of the University of Michigan – has been lauded as many fans’ favorite show of StarKid’s seven online musical productions, and this summer, a few lucky fans will get the chance to glimpse Starship’s planned sequel, Starship: Requiem.

A script-reading of Starship: Requiem will take place at LeakyCon 2014 in Orlando over the weekend of July 30 – August 3 as a strictly one-time-only event. Team StarKid staged their unfinished production of A Very Potter Senior Year as another one-off reading at LeakyCon in 2012, but unlike that event, this reading will be stripped back to a simple read-through –  “Not a full show and not anything as complex as AVPSY. No songs. Just the script,” states StarKid co-founder Nick Lang.

The group have no plans to post the reading online, as they hope to one day perform Starship: Requiem as a full production, though it will not be the production StarKid has planned for their Chicago summer season.

Starship, which featured a book by Nick Lang, Matt Lang, Joe Walker and Brian Holden, with music and lyrics by Darren Criss, followed the story of a bug named Bug who wanted to become a Starship Ranger. Bug gets a shot at his lifelong dream when he is transformed into a human being, and the show, which featured some spectacular puppeteering work from the cast, was originally pitched as The Little Mermaid meets Aliens.

Starship: Requiem will follow the story of Starship’s B-plot romance, between Tootsie Noodles, a sweet and simple Starship Ranger from Farm Planet, and Mega-Girl, a sentient android who learns to love in her own Spock-like way. Watch Tootsie and Mega-Girl fall in love below:

The official synopsis for Starship: Requiem reads:

The story follows the adventures of Mega-Girl the robot and her half-witted Starship Ranger husband. The newlyweds are sucked into a black hole of trouble when they go to visit Mega-Girl’s human-hating family, including her overbearing mother-unit, her jealous sister-unit and the return of her hunky ex-boyfriend-unit.

The current cast list for Starship: Requiem includes Julia Albain, Denise Donovan, Brian Holden, Nick Lang, Jim Povolo, Brian Rosenthal and the original Tootsie and Mega-Girl, Dylan Saunders and Meredith Stepien.

Are you one of the lucky few who will get to see the reading of Starship: Requiem at LeakyCon? If you were a fan of Starship, what do you think of Tootise and Mega-Girl getting their own musical?
