Taylor Swift is gearing up for the release of Red by revealing the inspiration behind her hit “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and teasing her next single, “Begin Again.”

Since releasing the sassy breakup song, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” fans have wondered who the song is about. Though she didn’t reveal the subject of the chart-topping tune, Swift did tell Billboard about how the song came to be.

“I was in the studio, and this guy who walked in was a friend of my ex’s. And he made some comment about how he heard how I was gonna get back together with my ex,” Swift said at the iHeartRadio Music Festival over the weekend. “And after he left I was talking to [co-writers and producers] Max [Martin] and Shellback and was like, ‘we are never ever getting back together!’ And after that happened I just grabbed my guitar.”

As the first single from Swift’s upcoming fourth studio album, Red, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” has been on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for six weeks, peaking at No. 1. It is currently sitting at No. 2 behind Maroon 5’s “One Night.”

Taylor Swift’s next single, “Begin Again,” goes on sale Tuesday, Sept. 25.

“It’s actually a song about kind of when you’ve gotten through a really bad relationship and you finally dust yourself off and go on that first date after a horrible breakup and the vulnerability that goes along with all of that,” she told Good Morning America.

The slower breakup tune seems to take a more positive approach to love.

“I think it’s strange you think I’m funny ’cause he never did,” she sings. “I’ve been spending the last eight months thinking all love ever does is break, burn and end. But on a Wednesday in a cafe, I watched it begin again.”

The 22-year-old singer will preview three more songs on GMA for the next three Mondays, leading up to the release of her new album.

Out Oct. 22, Red follows 2010’s Speak Now, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and produced singles in “Mean” and “Mine,” among others. The album won the 2011 American Music Award for Favorite Country Album.
