Rejoice, Thor: Ragnarok fans — Taika Waititi will be back to write and direct Chris Hemsworth in Thor 4.

Taika Waititi, writer, director and fashion icon, will be headed back to Marvel after a short stint over at Warner Bros. ended in an indefinite hiatus.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news early this afternoon that Taika Waititi has signed a deal to return to the Nine Realms and will write and direct the follow-up to his smash hit, Thor: Ragnarok.

Waititi’s first outing in the MCU brought his trademark wit and humor into the Thor franchise, infusing the film with a bright lavishness and giving star Chris Hemsworth the freedom to riff and improvise in a way that the previous films in the franchise hadn’t included.

Audiences responded well to the different approach, and Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok brought in over $800 million worldwide and made it the highest rated Thor film on Rotten Tomatoes.

Unfortunately, this means that another project he was set to begin will now be pushed back indefinitely.

Waititi was set to direct Warner Bros. long delayed, forever in pre-production hell adaptation of the Japanese manga, Akira and had even gotten the project to the point where he was testing actors in a world-wide talent search. However, script concerns delayed Akira’s shoot start date, making the production dates of both Akira and Thor 4 run too close for comfort for executives at Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. is eager to keep Taika Waititi on board, with the hopes that he will come back to Akira after he’s finished shooting Thor 4.

No word yet on any details for Thor 4, but it’s assumed that Chris Hemsworth will return as the God of Thunder, and with Taika Waititi on board once again, we’re sure to have a film that’s bright, bold and hilarious.
