Syfy is planning a Superman prequel series set on Krypton, following Superman’s grandfather. Georgina Campbell will play the female lead.

You know Superman as the big, handsome hero moonlighting as a newspaper journalist with magic glasses.

Now comes a show trailing the Kryptonian’s early years!

…Nope. Not Smallville. Think even earlier than that.

Syfy’s Superman prequel series Krypton takes place on Superman’s home planet, two generations before Kal-El was sent to Earth.

It follows Superman’s grandfather Seg-El, who fights to redeem his family honor, and save his beloved planet from its inevitable doom.

Via Deadline, Krypton has found its female lead: British actress Georgina Campbell, who will play Lyta Zod, a member of Krypton’s military caste and the daughter of General Alura Zod.

Lyta Zod also has a forbidden romance with Seg-El, making her the protagonist’s love interest — but we’re hoping this ‘reluctant warrior’ will turn out to be a lot more central to the plot.

Georgina Campbell is best known for the series After Hours, as well as Sadie J and Flowers (which also starred Olivia Colman).

She also starred in the affecting biopic Murdered By My Boyfriend, for which she won a British Academy Television Award for Best Actress in 2015.

Campbell can next be seen on the big screen in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and has a role in Broadchurch season 3.

Krypton will be executively produced by David S. Goyer, who will be familiar to DC fans as the screenwriter of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy (other notable credits include the Blade trilogy, Constantine and Da Vinci’s Demons), with Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) serving as showrunner.

Goyer co-wrote the pilot script with Ian Goldberg, and Colm McCarthy will direct.
