Move over, Prison Break: Syfy is working on a new futuristic series set in a prison society, titled 51st State.

It sounds like a darker Orange is the New Black (so, like, closer to vermillion): Syfy’s newest sci-fi venture is 51st State, an intriguing drama about inmates in a prison society.

Somewhere in the distant future, the U.S. finds a new way to deal with the ever-growing prison population: by purchasing Greenland (the country!) and sending its inmates off to live in co-ed colonies. They are promised freedom, but when that promise is broken, the inmates begin to rebel.

Basically it’s like what happened in Australia, but a hell of a lot colder. And hey, there are polar bears, and that’s always a plus (just look at Lost).

It’s an interesting concept, and we’ll look forward to learning more about the storyline. Greenland, obviously, already has a population, which is comprised both of native Inuits, and Greenlanders living in modern towns. Will they have any say in their new countrymates? Or will the colony be located far out on the uninhabitable icy terrain which covers most of the island?

Greenland is currently an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, but we’re guessing the futuristic Denmark has no qualms about selling its former colony.

51st State is developed with Fox 21 Television Studios. The pilot was written by Craig Borten, who was nominated for an Oscar with his Dallas Buyers Club script. Borten serves as executive producer on the series with Katherine Pope and Peter Chernin.
