Disney continues its live-action film adaptations with a Sword in the Stone remake, but this one will have Game of Thrones scribe Bryan Cogman penning the script.

Update: Cogman tweeted this photo yesterday of himself at Disneyland trying the Sword in the Stone experience. “Research” indeed!

The Sword in the Stone was released by Disney in 1963, which told the tale of a young King Arthur who was mentored by the famous wizard Merlin. With half a dozen live-action remakes announced by Disney, it’s no surprise to see this animated classic getting a live-action remake of its own.

Bryan Cogman is a writer and a producer on HBO’s insanely popular show Game of Thrones, and he’s been tapped to write the film’s script. THR reveals that Brigham Taylor will produce the live-action film, and is also producing Disney’s live-action remake of The Jungle Book.

The Sword in the Stone was the final movie released before Walt Disney’s death, and is based loosely on T.H. White’s novel which would later become one part of White’s The Once & Future King.

The story is well-known, but it’s possible we’ll see a twist on the young King Arthur story as it’s adapted to live-action. It’s exciting to see a Game of Thrones’ writer taking part in such a memorable animated story, we just hope no one loses a head in the live-action adaptation due to Cogman’s involvement.

We look forward to finding out more about the live-action movie adaptation of The Sword in the Stone, and hope to learn who will star as Arthur and the other key characters in the coming weeks.
