While those who follow book to film adaptations always look forward to seeing a story come to life on the big screen, there’s always worry over what will be cut, added, or changed.

In the new Hunger Games Illustrated Movie Companion (in stores now), book author Suzanne Collins briefly reveals a few changes you can expect to see in the film. These differences won’t leave fans thrilled.

Says Collins:

There were several significant differences from writing the book. Time, for starters. When you’re adapting a novel into a two-hour movie you can’t bring everything with you. So a lot of compression is needed. Not all the characters are going to make it to the screen. For example, we gave up Madge, cut the Avox girls’ backstory, and reduced the Career pack. It was hard to let them go but I don’t think that the choices damaged the emotional arc of the story.

Then there’s the question of how best to take a book told in the first person and transform it into a satisfying dramatic experience. In the novel, you never leave Katniss for a second and are privy to all of her thoughts. We needed to find ways to dramatize her inner world and to make it possible for other characters to exist outside of her company without letting the audience get ahead of her.

We already knew Madge was gone, but this is the first time we’re hearing that Avox Girl’s backstory and a smaller Career pack has been established. We wonder who is in the pack now? And how will we see Katniss show any emotion towards Avox Girl other than just feeling sorry she’s working in the Capitol?

The Hunger Games Illustrated Movie Companion and equally new Tribute Guide can be ordered using the respective links. We purchased both today and love the amount of new photos inside each. If you’re eager for new looks at the film, these are definitely worth picking up. They are short on new written information though.
