Supernatural executive producer Jeremy Carver and stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles teased the upcoming tenth season at the Television Critics Association press tour.

200th episode

The fifth episode of Supernatural‘s tenth season will mark the show’s 200th. According to Carver, it will be “musical-ish.” What does that mean? “I think it’ll be one of the more amusing and engaging episodes we’ve done in a while. I think we can safely call this a meta episode,” Carver previews.

“We’re going pretty meta,” he adds. “I would just describe it as something of a love letter to our fans and there will be songs.”

Carver had no comment on whether Padalecki and Ackles would be singing, though it was written into a season 3 script that Dean sings poorly. As for dancing, Carver would only say, “Potentially.” There will also be multiple songs, some original and some covers.

We also know the episode will be titled “Fan Fiction” and penned by fan favorite writer Robbie Thompson. Thompson’s other outings include season 7’s “Slash Fiction” and “The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo,” season 8’s “LARP and the Real Girl” and “Pac-Man Fever,” and season 9’s “Slumber Party” and “First Born.”

Fans have long been waiting for a musical episode of the series, which is well-known for its many meta outings, so we’re excited to see what Thompson comes up with.

‘Supernatural’s’ ending?

Other tidbits that came out of the TCA panel include that there is still plenty of story left to be told in the Supernatural universe. “I think we’re all on the same page,” Ackles says of himself, Padalecki, and Carver. “We still get excited by it and I think that that hasn’t tarnished in 10 years.”

After reiterating his excitement for the season 9 finale which saw Dean becoming a demon, he adds, “I think as long as there’s that fulfillment, that enjoyment, that excitement, then, yeah, we will keep going, as long as people are hanging in with us and are still entertained. We love these stories.”

Carver adds, “I know that [creator] Eric Kripke always had an ending in mind. He hasn’t yet shared it with me. I have an image and the like, but I always want to keep room for… happy accidents as well.”

Season 10

As for season 10, Carver previews that there will be some new characters: demons, angels, ghosts, werewolves. He also teases, “We’ll be staying with Demon Dean for more than one episode.” However, what we’ll see will be a “different type of Demon Dean then you might expect.”

Meanwhile, Sam will be hunting for his brother, but he won’t be alone on that search. This “mysterious character who is on the same hunt” will cause complications for the Winchesters. As for Castiel, he “is very much in the picture at the beginning of season 10,” but he’s “in danger of dying” because of his failing grace.

Supernatural season 10 premieres Tuesday, October 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
