We’ve learned a bit more about the upcoming Supernatural spin-off, including the setting and the premise.

The spin-off of the veteran CW drama will take place in Chicago, TVLine reports. The spin-off will explore the clashing hunter and monster cultures in the city.

The Winchesters are no strangers to the Windy City, having visited in episodes including season 1’s “Shadow” and season 5’s “Two Minutes to Midnight.”

We previously reported that the spin-off will feature new characters. While the spin-off is still in the early stages of development at The CW, sources indicate that the protagonist will be introduced in a backdoor pilot toward the end of season 9.

This is a similar approach The CW took to launch The Vampire Diaries spin-off, The Originals. The pilot aired in The Vampire Diaries season 4. It introduced the new cast and setting, and the new series will premiere in October.

Deadline also reports that the pilot will be written by Supernatural supervising producer Andrew Dabb. Dabb joined the Supernatural writing staff in season 4 with writing partner Daniel Loflin. The two began writing separately in season 8.

It was also announced that Supernatural‘s season 9 premiere will be a week earlier than previously anticipated. The Winchesters will return to The CW on Tuesday, October 8 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
