“All the normal constructs have been decimated,” Carver says of the new season. “There’s no king of Hell because Crowley is their captive. There are no angels in Heaven; the angels are on Earth. So the normal rules of the game aren’t really applying.”

Season 9 picks up minutes after season 8 ended, Singer reveals. And the decision the brothers made not to close the gates of Hell in the finale “is going to have a lot of fallout.”

What else can we expect in season 9?

The brothers

Sam and Dean’s, along with Kevin’s, next mission will be digging up any information the Men of Letters have on Knights of Hell — like Abaddon, who looks to be a major player in the vacuum left in Hell’s leadership with Crowley’s capture by the Winchesters.

Carver calls the Men of Letters bunker the show’s “biggest and most significant set” while Singer describes it as “a treasure trove of stories.” According to both EPs, we’ll discover new rooms in the bunker and should anticipate unexpected stories for the Men of Letters.

“In terms of theme this year,” Carver previews, “number one would be consequences. Dean is going to have to make some very, very, very crucial decisions very early on in the season that are essentially going to drive the mythology for the rest of the year.”

“And that’s a burden that he carries more than, you know, Sam taking the lead or what their roles are. It’s a whole new direction,” Singer adds. “It’s a whole new brand of guilt for Dean.”

Castiel

As for Castiel, “in being human for the first time, he’s really going into this without a net,” Carver says. “He’s not going to be with the Winchesters, so he’s not going to have his safety blanket as it were to lead him through this.”

Castiel’s arc will touch on what it means to be human, Singer explains. “Having to eat, having to sleep, where will he sleep.”

“He’s got to deal with that while dealing with the very, very real fallout from the angels falling to Earth, which one could blame him for. Which many angels do blame him for,” Carver continues. “So we’re going to find Castiel in a role where he’s both human and also hunted.”

Returning characters

“Anybody can always come back; where there’s a will, there’s a Supernatural way, I guess,” Carver says.

“Felicia [Day] as Charlie will be back,” Singer confirms. And so will Alaina Huffman as Abaddon.

Also returning is Jim Beaver as Bobby, and he “comes back in a way that we do not expect, do not see coming, and does have a catch to it.”

Soul searching

“At a certain point in the season, early and later on, each one of our major characters is going to be asked to sort of reevaluate who they are and what they stand for,” Carver previews.

“Cas’ll be back in a big way,” Singer teases. “Crowley’s back in a big way.”

“Basically you’ve got angels, demons, and humans walking around figuring out and trying to deal with what hath Metatron wrought,” Carver concludes.

“While the boys chose each other and are ostensibly stronger than ever, there’s going to be a lot of fallout from that decision.”

Supernatural season 8 hits DVD/Blu-ray today. Season 9 premieres on Tuesday, October 8 at 9:00 p.m. on The CW.
