The CW has released a promo for the second half of Supernatural season 9, featuring a look at the Winchesters causing trouble for Heaven and Hell alike.

In the Supernatural mid-season finale, we learned that the angel inhabiting Sam wasn’t Ezekiel after all, but an angel named Gadreel. Metatron recruited Gadreel to help him rebuild Heaven. However, he first had to eliminate threats to Metatron’s cause. His first casualty? Kevin.

We were left with the young prophet dead and Sam’s consciousness buried completely in his own body. Meanwhile, Castiel, after being taken captive by one of the feuding angel factions on Earth, killed another angel and stole his grace for himself, making him an angel once more.

Be sure to read our recap for “Holy Terror,” then watch the Facebook exclusive promo below.

The episode synopsis for the mid-season premiere, titled “Road Trip,” reads:

DEAN’S BEST CHANCE OF SAVING SAM LIES WITH CROWLEY — Dean (Jensen Ackles) is devastated after Kevin’s death and vows to find the angel that killed him, not only to free Sam (Jared Padalecki), but to seek revenge. Castiel (Misha Collins) arrives at the bunker and suggests they try to separate Sam’s brain from the angel’s so they can talk to Sam and have him expel Gadreel. However, there’s one small problem: the only person who knows how to do that is Crowley (Mark Sheppard). Robert Singer directed the episode written by Andrew Dabb (910).

We can see from the promo above, as well as the synopsis for episode 11 “First Born,” that Gadreel is ejected from Sam’s body fairly quickly. However, it looks like Sam will feel the need to make amends while Dean and Crowley run into Cain in their search for a dagger that can kill Abaddon.

Also notable in the promo is the return of DJ Qualls’ Garth, who was last seen in season 8’s “Southern Comfort.” He has since been repeatedly mentioned as supposedly looking after Kevin while the Winchesters were on the road.

Supernatural returns with new episodes on Tuesday, January 14 at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
