The Supernatural season 9 finale, titled “Do You Believe in Miracles,” aired tonight. Read our recap and discuss the episode with fellow fans.

Bloodlust

After “Carry On My Wayward Son” plays, Sam and Cas manage to subdue Dean and lock him in the dungeon, much like Dean once locked Sam in the panic room. On the main floor, Sam stores the First Blade, but Gadreel is gone. Back in the dungeon, Dean starts coughing up blood.

Meanwhile, Metatron broadcasts a message over angel radio welcoming Castiel’s followers then announces he is leaving and that Heaven’s door will be closed pending his return.

Cas and Sam track the bleeding Gadreel. Cas heals him, weakening himself. Gadreel says Metatron is planning to visit humanity.

Dean summons Crowley and demands to know what’s happening to him; Crowley tells him that the Mark wants him to kill, and that suppressing that urge will make him ill. Cain could fight the urge because he was a demon, but Dean’s human body isn’t strong enough.

Going viral

Crowley helps Dean escape and take the First Blade. Gadreel says it’s useful that Dean has it because Metatron is harnessing the angel tablet to supplement his power. They’ll need to break the connection. Gadreel offers to bring Cas to Heaven’s door to get the tablet.

Dean and Crowley stop at a restaurant while Dean tries and fails to track angelic omens. Luckily, two of the newly reinstated King of Hell’s followers bring news: Metatron has gone viral after being caught on video healing a hit and run victim. Dean leaves a burger on the table, so we know things are serious.

Meanwhile, Gadreel brings Castiel to Heaven’s door. Gadreel pretends to have taken Cas prisoner, and the guards let them in. The angels waiting in Heaven let them into Metatron’s office — only for walls to rise and turn into cells. The ruse failed.

Dean tracks the hit and run victim to a trailer park, where Sam is waiting. He already talked to her. The brothers argue, with Sam calling Dean out on refusing to explain himself. He then says he knows Dean is the best shot to take out Metatron. Dean will take his shot no matter the consequences. Sam agrees, but they’re doing it together.

Sam says Metatron whispered his next stop to the girl he revived. Dean then sends Crowley away before the brothers head off.

The search for redemption

After Metatron heals a homeless man’s diabetes, an angel appears and calls him a fraud. He continues to deride Metatron until the homeless community steps in to defend Metatron Marv. They call him a miracle worker and messiah. The angel is prepared to kill Metatron, but the community turns on him first. Metatron kicks his angel blade over and the mob kills the angel.

Nighttime. Sam returns from checking out the homeless camp and finds Dean in pain, though he covers it. As Sam picks up the First Blade, Dean starts to apologize and Sam cuts him off with an “I know.” The brotherly moment is ruined, though, when Dean knocks Sam out, saying it’s not his fight.

In angel prison, Gadreel says he sat in this very prison for thousands of years dreaming of redemption. Angels need to protect those who can’t protect themselves. Gadreel carved the energy-focusing sigil into his chest and stabs himself, hoping he’ll be remembered as an angel who gave Heaven a second chance.

Final showdown

When Dean enters the homeless encampment, he’s directed to Metatron. Metatron calls Dean cynical and rages against God, saying he never knew the humans’ names who prayed to him while Metatron knows them and has walked among them.

Dean pulls out the First Blade, but Metatron says he’s stalling because nothing can come of this unless Cas and Gadreel succeed in Heaven. Dean punches Metatron, and Metatron goads him. When Dean attacks, Metatron overpowers him. He kicks the First Blade away and beats him bloody. Dean manages to summon the First Blade.

Castiel, now free of his prison, searches for the angel tablet in Metatron’s office and eventually finds it under the typewriter.

Sam arrives in the warehouse just in time to see Metatron stab Dean with an angel blade. Dean collapses as the angel tablet shatters. Sam reaches Dean’s side as the ground starts shaking. Sam tries to stab Metarton, who disappears to Heaven.

There, he tells Cas that Dean is dead. Cas says the angels will discover they’ve been played, to which Metatron replies they’ll still follow him. Castiel points out angel radio is on; the angels then turn on Metatron.

‘It’s all become so expected’

Dean tries to tell Sam to leave, but Sam isn’t having any of it and tries to carry Dean out. Dean makes Sam stop and says he’s proud of them. In a scene evocative of season 2’s “All Hell Breaks Loose,” Sam holds Dean and sobs as he dies.

Back in Heaven, Cas and Hannah lock Metatron in prison. Hannah says Cas is making the right call as a leader. Cas replies for the umpteenth time that he doesn’t want to lead.

The “All Hell Breaks Loose” parallel continues as Sam brings Dean’s body back to the bunker and lays him out. Crowley appears in Dean’s doorway. He says Sam, as expected, is in the basement summoning him as they speak.

He tells Dean he never thought this would happen when he encouraged him to take the Mark. Though he never lied, he may have forgotten to tell Dean one story about Cain: Cain was willing to die rather than become a killer so committed suicide, but the Mark didn’t let him go.

Crowley puts the First Blade in Dean’s hand and tells him that what he’s feeling is life. Dean then opens his eyes — his black eyes.
