The CW has released a batch of promotional stills from Supernatural season 9, episode 9 “Holy Terror,” featuring a suited up Team Free Will.

These photos from Supernatural‘s mid-season finale depict the Winchesters, suited up in their FBI duds, working alongside a similarly-suited Castiel as well as the return of a certain Heavenly scribe.

Yes, it looks as though Metatron is back after being MIA for the first half of season 9. The angel, who stole Castiel’s grace and cast the angels out of Heaven at the end of season 8, appears to be talking with Sam.

Or is he?

Sam’s posture is straighter than usual in these images, indicating Metatron may actually be speaking with Ezekiel. It makes sense that Metatron would recognize Ezekiel’s presence in Sam, but has he specifically sought him out or is this confrontation merely a chance encounter?

If Metatron and Ezekiel are working together after all, it sheds new light on Metatron’s interactions with the Winchesters in regards to the demon trials, so we’re looking forward to seeing what may come of this.

The official synopsis for the episode reads:

AN ANGEL WAR BEGINS — After a massive angel slaughter occurs, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) arrive at the scene to investigate and are surprised to run into Castiel (Misha Collins). While investigating, Castiel is captured and tortured. Meanwhile, Dean questions Ezekiel’s demands and wonders if it might be time to tell Sam the truth. Thomas J. Wright directed the episode written by Eugenie Ross-Leming & Brad Buckner (909).

The fact that Ezekiel is apparently making demands of Dean is particularly interesting in light of his possible discussion with Metatron.

And, perhaps most importantly, will Dean finally tell Sam about his angelic hitchhiker?

Supernatural season 9, episode 9 “Holy Terror” airs Tuesday, December 3 at 9:00 p.m. EST on The CW.
