Supernatural season 9, episode 6 “Heaven Can’t Wait” aired tonight, featuring the adventures of human Castiel.

So what happened in the Supernatural season 9, episode 6 “Heaven Can’t Wait”?

    • The episode opens with a man getting ready to kill himself. After hanging up on the suicide hotline, he almost shoots himself but stops at the last minute. A mysterious figure shows up, though, who puts his hand to the man’s head in a familiar gesture, killing him in a pink explosion. That’s a new one, so color us intrigued.
    • Cut to a Gas-N-Sip where Castiel, alias Steve (RIP Clarence), is working. He’s studying his customers for human mannerisms, like stirring coffee and shooting trash into a can. There might be a little something-something going on with his manager, Nora, but more on that later. Cas finds a newspaper article about the man from the opening.
    • In the Men of Letters bunker, Kevin, who we have missed dearly for the last few weeks, informs the Winchesters that he’s translated the tablet into an extinct doodle language that we can’t spell. Time for research. Dean looks like he’d rather be anywhere else, but he’s saved by the bell when Cas calls about a case, so he heads out and leaves Sam and Kevin to research.
    • Back at the Gas-N-Sip, Cas is rocking the whole human job thing, and Nora asks him on a date. And since she’s not a Reaper, Cas accepts.
    • Meanwhile, Dean checks on Cas’ case and learns that the four victims so far were the county’s “saddest sacks,” according to the sheriff. The crime scene is a delightful pink explosion. Of what, you ask? Everything. Blood, skin, guts, you name it. It looks like this is indeed a real case.
    • The Winchesters exchange updates, and Dean suggests Sam and Kevin talk to Crowley about their dead end while refusing Sam’s help on his case. But Dean can multitask; he’s also stalking Cas at his job while he talks to his brother.
    • At the local high school, a teenage girl is on the phone with a friend, upset about a breakup. “I could just die,” she complains in typical teenage hyperbole. A guy appears behind her and offers to help with that. Cue a scream and pink flash.
    • Dean shows up at the Gas-N-Sip, but — plot twist — Cas isn’t thrilled to see him. He’s content nuking taquitos and nachos. And hey, since he found a job in this economy, he has every right to be happy. Dean tries to convince him to help, but Cas is having none of it. When Dean gets a call about a new death, Cas finally relents — once his shift is over, that is.
    • Back in the bunker, joy thy name is Sam and Crowley scenes. Sam fills Crowley in on their dilemma and Crowley does indeed have the skill set to read the doodle language we can’t spell. But, naturally, he’ll only help for a price. Sam and Crowley sass each other a bit, Sam saying Abaddon is scarier than Crowley has been in years and Crowley throwing some crumpled paper in Sam’s face. All in all, it’s pretty great.
    • At the high school, there’s another pink explosion. The friend the victim was talking to before her death tells Dean and the sheriff about the breakup while Cas looks on, horrified. It turns out he recognizes this handiwork from Heaven. It’s bad, he says. When is it ever good?
    • Cas tells Dean that this is the work of a medic angel, who treated wounded angels on Heaven’s battlefields. Cas realizes this angel is continuing his Heavenly work on Earth, bringing mercy to those in pain. He doesn’t understand the intricacies of human emotion, though, so a teenager’s breakup holds equal weight to a suicidal man. Cas then tells Dean he has to take care of this angel alone.
    • In the bunker, Crowley wants a phone call in exchange for his translation. Kevin is completely against it, for good reason, but Sam doesn’t think Crowley has any information to share with Abaddon so goes with it. Look, logic! Before agreeing, though, Sam demands proof that Crowley can read the doodles after all, so Crowley reads off ingredients for a spell — the same ones Metatron gave Castiel. Crowley then demands his call before reading the rest.
    • Dean drops Cas off for his date, offering some advice on fashion and dating. Cas cuts a rose from the bush by the door to give to Nora before signalling Dean to leave. It’s all very brotherly and cute. Unfortunately, Nora actually had a date with someone else and just wanted Steve to babysit. Alas.
    • Bunker: Sam is ready to bleed for Crowley’s hotline to Hell, but Crowley wants Kevin’s blood — for variety, he says. For nefarious purposes, we say. Kevin relents, though, and Crowley makes his call. But the King of Hell is placed on hold when he tries to reach Abaddon.
    • Back at Nora’s, the baby starts crying, so a clueless Cas sings “Greatest American Hero,” and eventually the baby calms. You read that correctly. He then realizes the baby has a fever and freaks out a bit, unsure of what to do.
    • Dean gets a call from the sheriff and they realize that the first victim’s husband is still alive — the husband whose truck Dean saw outside of Nora’s. Dun dun dun.
    • Completely lost, Cas plans to take the baby to the hospital, but is interrupted by our husband-turned-angel, Ephraim. Ephraim wants to wash the planet clean of all suffering, starting with Cas, whose pain he could hear for miles.
    • As Ephraim monologues, Cas cuts himself on the discarded rose’s thorns to gather some blood in his hand, but Ephraim stops him before he can draw a banishing sigil. He’s about to smite Cas when Dean arrives, though he’s tossed aside. Cas tells Ephraim that he wants to live, and Dean tosses Cas his angel blade. Cas stabs Ephraim.
    • Back in the dungeon, Crowley finally gets through to Abaddon, and Alaina Huffman’s presence is a most welcome surprise. Abaddon, it seems, has been collecting souls for Hell by voiding Crowley’s ten-year contracts; she’s taking the old order down brick-by-brick while Crowley continues to lose support because he’s turned into the Winchesters’ kennel dog.
    • After ending the call, Crowley agrees to help with the translations because he keeps his agreements. And the translation has some big news: Metatron’s spell is irreversible.
    • While cleaning up, Sam realizes one of the syringes is missing. He hurries to the dungeon, but when he gets there he finds Crowley injecting himself with Kevin’s blood like some kind of drug. Whaaaat?
    • The next morning, Dean drops Cas off at the Gas-N-Sip, but not before apologizing for telling Cas to leave — though he still doesn’t come clean about why. Dean also tells Cas he’s proud of him for adapting and that he and Sam will take care of the angels. They part ways yet again, though Cas remains unsettled.
