After months of waiting, Supernatural season 9, episode 1 “I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here” airs tonight. Prepare for the fall with a refresher on season 8.

Supernatural‘s eighth season revolved around the Winchester brothers trying to seal the gates of Hell permanently. To do so, they had to complete three trials.

After killing a hellhound and rescuing Bobby’s soul from Hell, Sam was tasked with curing a demon in the season 8 finale. Sam had nearly cured Crowley when Dean arrived to stop him since completing the trial would be fatal.

Meanwhile, Castiel worked alongside angelic scribe Metatron to seal off Heaven as well to prevent the battles of Heaven from spilling to Earth. However, Metatron betrayed Castiel and stole his grace, rendering him human. Metatron then expelled all the angels from Heaven.

The season 8 finale ended with Sam collapsing in pain as he and Dean watched the angels fall to Earth.

So what can we expect in season 9?

“You never want to say that it’s going to be not as epic, but that was a pretty big end to the season. I think the way to make that resonate would be to have the early parts of Season 9 deal with the fallout of the epic event,” executive producer Jeremy Carver tells Zap2It.

“The best way to really make that take hold is with a character-driven approach in that we’re watching all our characters across the spectrum deal with the events of the finale and the ramifications.”

“I think the setup of the season is really great. We’re starting hitting the ground running, which is a really good premise,” Misha Collins adds. “Basically these really powerful angels and the demons we’ve already been dealing with are out to get us, and that’s a very formidable foe. That sets things up nicely.”
