With the Supernatural season premiere only one day away, we’ve been getting more and more scoops about what to expect from the monster-hunting Winchester brothers in their eighth season. Here’s our spoiler roundup of the top five things you need to know going into “We Need to Talk About Kevin.”

5. Genre twists, classic rock, and a new title card, oh my!

After previewing the season premiere, Zap2It was effusive in its love for it. And a major thing we took from its preview is that the show is going back to its roots, with the episode’s teaser being “a little like the openings we got used to in the early part of season 1, with an old-fashioned horror story cold open that gets turned on its head and given a Winchester twist.” But more than that, “[t]he desaturated colors and classic rock have also made a comeback.” And don’t forget the new title card, which relates to the Word of God storyline.

4. You’ve got a friend in… Benny the vampire?

Dean escapes from Purgatory with the help of a vampire named Benny, and while Dean is loath to tell Sam about his Purgatory companion, it’s not for the reasons we might expect. “When we see a flashback to his and Dean’s first meeting, they’re reluctant allies,” Zap2It explains, “but by the time they get back, they’ve become extremely close — even downright affectionate.”

New showrunner Jeremy Carver teased to TVLine that both Benny’s “physical presence and psychological presence” will be important. “The idea of Benny hangs over our brothers pretty heavily. He’s a guy who has a tremendous, tremendous bearing.”

3. Kevin is definitely worth talking about

After escaping from Crowley’s clutches, our favorite teenage prophet has honed his skills as a prophet and become a capable hunter in his own right, Zap2It reveals. In drawing further parallels between seasons 1 and 8, Kevin is compared to a much younger Sam: “He’s knowledgeable and can hold his own in a hunt, but he’d really rather be taking Psych 101 at Princeton — something raises the stakes for him and gives him a real reason to fight, the way that Jessica’s death did for Sam.” Beyond his outward transformation, “[w]e’ll learn more about how he personally feels about being a prophet…[and] the personal cost that it has for him,” showrunner Jeremy Carver told TVLine.

2. Sam has some ‘splaining to do

After Dean disappeared at the end of season 7, Sam quit hunting and turned to a regular life, even finding “a real solace, a real comfort” with a vet named Amelia, explains executive producer Robert Singer to TVLine.

When Dean returns, though, he isn’t impressed with his hunter-turned-civilian brother, “especially when he learns that Sam has ignored Kevin’s frantic calls for months since Sam ditched all his phones,” says Zap2It. “Still, Dean doesn’t seem to take it as a personal offense, and though he’s disappointed in Sam’s actions, this doesn’t feel more damaging to their relationship than anything that’s come before.” Though in the inevitable conflict, Singer adds, “everyone will get their licks in.”

1. Purgatory has changed Dean

It sounds like while in Purgatory, Dean tapped into the “primal” side of himself that turned torturer while in hell, and “he was surprised to find that he liked it,” Zap2It describes. Once he and Sam reunite, “[t]here’s some PTSD stuff similar to what we saw when Dean returned from hell, but it doesn’t feel like a rehashing of an old story. Dean is more like a soldier who returns from war and doesn’t quite know how to fit into his former life.”

Bonus: The Winchesters meet ‘Teen Wolf’?

Well, sort of. While the Winchesters won’t be running into the stars of MTV’s breakout hit, according to E!Online, the season’s fourth episode will be light on the Winchesters, instead focusing on “three teenagers who get wolf powers” and will be “shot entirely with handheld camera.” Carver told TVLine the “hour consisting almost entirely of Paranormal Activity-style ‘found footage'” will be “pretty unlike any episode that the show has ever done before.”

Supernatural season 8 premieres Wednesday, October 3 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
