‘Supernatural’ season 15 return date
After having to shut down production months prior due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Supernatural season 15 will finally be making its return.
Kicking off where it left off, Supernatural season 15 will return on Thursday October 8, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
The network will also be airing a special for the series finale on November 19, 2020. Supernatural: The Long Road Home will air prior to the series finale.

‘Supernatural’ series finale announcement
Supernatural season 15 was announced as part of The CW’s early renewal slate at the Winter TCAs on January 31. Later, on March 22, we found out that season 15 will be the show’s last. This decision to bring the show to a close was at the behest of the show’s stars, who broke the news to the world in an emotional video a few days before they wrapped filming on season 14. Supernatural season 15 will comprise of 20 episodes, bringing the complete series to 327 episodes in all.
A statement from showrunners Andrew Dabb and Robert Singer read: “Firstly, we would like to thank all the people who have been involved with the show both in front of and behind the camera. For us it has been an experience of a lifetime. The support we have had from both Warner Bros Television and The CW has been incredible. We’d like to give special thanks to Jensen, Jared and Misha for making this journey so special. It is now most important to us to give these characters that we love the send off they deserve.”
‘Supernatural’ season 15 trailers
CW released an epic trailer for the Supernatural season 15 return on October 8, 2020.
On January 10, the Supernatural crew released what may be the final production trailer of season 15. These production videos, a series known as “Shaving People, Punting Things,” are a much closer and more detailed look at the episodes in progress, and are put together by the show’s production team, not the network.
These trailers, designed with the true die-hard SPN family in mind, are the primary resource to look out for if you want a deep, detailed first look at the season. This installment is called “Drowning” and it’s set to the song of the same name by Radio Company, Jensen Ackles’ band. It features scenes from episodes 9 through to episode 12 or 13. Watch it now and read our recap of what it reveals below.
Amid plenty of cinematic shots of the Impala pulling in and out of various places, and cool fight scenes featuring people and monsters we haven’t met yet, and angsty boy drama scenes, there are a large number of moments that give us some indication of the plot and the vibe of the next few episodes.
We see that Chuck is very much present – lounging in a fake Radio Shack type store, watching various disasters around the world on the big screens, playing his guitar in the casino. We also see quite a lot of his direct conflict with Sam, including Sam falling to his knees in the casino, and Chuck showing Sam his pocket watch in the same location. At some point, Sam challenges whatever Chuck is doing, yelling “Chuck, I know what what you’re doing!”
“All good things must come to an end,” Chuck says, examining a scalpel. We later see the same knife being dug into Sam’s chest, presumably digging at the Equalizer wound linking Sam and God.
There’s a number of scenes involving Sam and Dean in a warehouse that has chain link dividers, or cages like storage lockers. At some points the boys seem to be contained within one, and it’s here that Dean seems to finally have taken some ownership over their situation. “Not everything we did was because of Chuck. The blood, the sweat, the tears, man. That’s us.”
Facing another monstrous threat, Sam and Dean throw back to their season 12 “Who We Are” musings – and Jared and Jensen’s old adage – of going out in a blaze of glory together, like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Later, when Dean seems to have lost hope once more, Sam implores him – “What happened to Butch and Sundance? What happened to going out swinging?”
There’s plenty of shots of Dean and Castiel in Purgatory – including, it seems, the pair being led or guided by someone else on their quest. We also see Dean waking up or getting up from a battlefield, surrounded by monster bones and tree stumps, and we see him on high alert, cocking a gun at a noise, which turns out to be Cas sitting by a tree stump. If this is a redux of the original Purgatory plot, it seems like they will get separated. In Purgatory, we also seem to see a part of Dean’s much anticipated prayer about his mental state and behavior – weeping, he admits “I can’t stop it. No matter how bad I want to, I just can’t stop it.”
We see Castiel operating a bullet press in the Bunker, seemingly filling casings with Borax. Leviathans are the only creatures in Supernatural history that have ever been fought off with Borax, so… do the math. We also see Cas entering a doctor’s examination room and finding an empty, blood smeared chair and pool of blood on the floor.
A very beaten and bloody Jody Mills is telling someone, on the phone, “she’s dead.” We also see Jody and Bobby working together inside a stairwell. Someone, wearing what looks like a black sweatshirt, is opening the case on what looks like Claire Novak’s Grigori angel sword, and picking it up. Kaia, in what looks like a black sweatshirt – not the Dark Kaia robes – is seen looking scared in the dark. She’s seen again later, grabbing a roughly made knife from a bed of furs and exiting a tent.
More quick shots: Eileen reaching up to touch Sam’s face. Sam breaking on a pool table. Billie with her scythe in the Bunker. Dean throwing up into a toilet. Sam smashing plates off the kitchen counter. Dean and Castiel sitting miserably together in the kitchen, later sharing a very fancy decanter of Scotch in the Bunker library armchairs, and later casting a spell together over a blue flame in a bowl. Someone tracing Mary’s initials on the Bunker table.
And some confusing, ‘not all is as it seems’ moments, surely: like Dean holding a large blonde baby. Both Dean and the baby look very skeptical of one another. Or a very different looking Sam and Dean – Sam in an aubergine suit and pashmina with a half ponytail, and Dean with fluffy bangs, an expensive watch, and a fancy tan jacket – clinking beers in the Bunker. Or Dean stepping out on stage – in front of red velvet curtains – immaculate in a white dinner jacket and boater hat. We also see Dean falling off his chair at the war table, and Sam looking on – they’re in their normal clothes but Sam still has the half ponytail.
As the Impala races off into the distance, the trailer closes with a quote from Chuck – “No doubt, endings are hard. But then again, nothing ever really ends, does it?” – which fans will remember was actually the close of his final monologue in “Swan Song.” This sounds like a direct lifting of that piece of audio – I don’t believe it’s Rob Benedict doing a new line reading, it sounds like the original quote as we fade to black.

“It just makes you think if all of it, you know, everything that we’ve done, what did it even mean?” Dean begins.
Dean with matching slashes over his cheekbones, Dean tied to a chair in a storeroom, Dean seemingly preparing to shoot someone at point blank range in the middle of the bunker War Room, Dean walking alone through the center path of a car scrapyard, Dean showing off, once again, the Mark of Cain on his forearm. (The video features some flashbacks, but they’re all color graded in a certain way to reflect that. The Mark of Cain shot is not.) Dean armed with a long blade, holding the head of a kneeling prisoner in the deep woods. Dean – a very different Dean – bearded, wearing tactical gloves and a scarf and looking extremely post-apocalyptic – fighting a suited man (Cas? Ketch?) in the Bunker hallway, and throwing him into a wall.
With a ton of clues flickering through every second, we can tell that this trailer features moments from up to at least episode 7, as there’s a flash of Dean and Leo Webb (guest star Christian Kane) clasping hands in greeting a Texas bar.
“I can see it now. ‘Supernatural: The End. And the cover is just a gravestone that says ‘Winchester.'” Chuck taunts someone in conversation, as we glimpse him with a predatory smile.
“That’s Chuck’s ending? No. After everything that he has put us through, I’ll be damned if I’m gonna let some glorified fanboy get the last word.” Dean retorts, placed thematically, though clearly not directly, in response to Chuck’s statement.
Castiel, kneeling in a crypt or chapel by a burnt out skeletal husk of a body, the camera on him from behind the intricately carved stone window arch. Cas descending the stairs of a suburban house, on the hunt, and just missing a Bloody Mary appearing in a hallway mirror. Cas handing over a mythological artifact made of an animal’s horn. Cas, his hand trembling as he raises his blade to strike something below him, but holds back.
Sam, lit with red, smirking in a way that can only be described as evil. Sam, seated and unconscious or in a trance, dressed in all white, reminiscent of his Lucifer suit, but again, not a flashback, a new scene.
“This feels bigger than us, you know? And I’m out of ideas,” we hear from Sam. “Sammy, please. Please.” Dean begs his brother.
A closeup on a creepy, segmented ring. A closeup on a hand holding a concealed syringe. Rowena, in a pinkish lilac gown, curled up in a moment of sad reflection. Several shots of a dead young woman, with a pool of blood by her face, a tattoo of a vulture and a skull behind her ear. Several shots of a werewolf man. Jake Abel’s Adam Milligan, the Winchesters’ lost half-brother, sitting at a diner booth, across from… an identical copy of himself.
A new voice – the one Chuck is actually talking to. Female, tortured, indignant. “You can’t do this to the fans. It’s awful. Horrible. Hopeless.” It’s reminiscent of Becky Rosen, but I could not swear it’s the same actor. However, this is definitely a conversation between Chuck Shurley and a horrified fan of the Carver Edlund books, the Winchester Gospels.
“I can do anything. I’m a writer. Fans are gonna love it.”
Supernatural season 15 is going to be about putting a stop to all of God’s games and grabbing free will by the balls. In this short video, we hear Dean repeating Chuck’s final mic-drop moment – “Welcome to the end” – as we are reminded just how high the stakes are for our boys on this last ride after the revelations about God’s sickening plan for the boys in the season 14 finale. Sam puts it best when he reminds his brother “If we win this, we’re free.”
Now that they know the truth – that every obstacle they faced was manufactured by the author of their universe, meddling with them to watch in entertainment as they overcame it – now that those cards are on the table, if they can put a final stop to all of that, and write their own ending (for real, this time) then they get to escape the hell on earth that has figuratively been their life story so far and is now the literal threat facing them.
We also see the boys realize what we saw in the season 14 finale – the true scope of God’s disastrous move is that all of the spooks the boys have sent on their way over the past 15 years have been resurrected and must be dealt with once again – starting with a throwback to the show’s very first case, the Woman in White from the pilot. It’s only fitting, then, that the trailer ends with a present-day redux of the iconic trunk-slam – “We got work to do.”
Along with this first Supernatural season 15 trailer, the CW also revealed this beautiful golden key art poster featuring Sam, Dean, Cas and Jack. As well as the show’s four stars, the poster features the words “As it was written, so it shall end” all sorts of interesting and ominous imagery pertaining to the end of the road for the Winchester saga, including a raven on a skull, a flock of doves in flight, devils trap and Enochian symbols, a huge set of angel wings, and a stairway leading to a set of gates from which a blinding light bursts out… dun dun dun.

‘Supernatural’ season 15 news, comments and teasers

● The back half of the season will feature a flashback episode with a younger version of the brothers – something the show hasn’t done since season 11.
● Misha Collins revealed onstage in Jacksonville that regardless of whether Kathryn Newton appears, a story to do with the character of Claire is an upcoming plot point.
● Plotwise, the start of the season, picking up where we left off in season 14, will involve containing the mess Chuck left when he revealed his masterplan to the boys, and emotionally it will involve the existential crisis of free will – was anything the boys ever did real, or were all their choices written by Chuck as part of his “favorite show”? Did they actually make a difference? Does anything matter?
● Another aspect of this is that things that used to work for the boys, fighting monsters, will literally not work anymore – Chuck made the rules and he can break them. “There’s kind of a fun episode where everybody has to accept the fact that things aren’t working by the old rules. So all the things that used to work for Cas or Sam or Dean [don’t anymore] – nothing makes sense,” Brad Buckner told press at SDCC.
● Andrew Dabb also revealed that “some of the things they’ve relied on to get through the day — people, talents, things like that — they are no longer going to be able to roll out. And that’s going to throw them for a loop.”
● Dabb also confirms that Jack will begin the season in the Empty, and may be there for some time. Singer revealed that whatever Death offers Jack – remember the season closed on Billie and the Empty entity waiting over Jack in the Empty, clearly ready to have a big chat – will unfold over the course of the season. Calvert told press at SDCC that there might be “a reluctance this time to want to go back [to earth] right away. Just because he knows the damage that he’s capable of.”
● Confirmed returning characters include Amara, Chuck, Eileen, Rowena, Ketch, Kevin and Adam Milligan, the Winchesters’ lost half-brother.
● Fan favorite guest star Matt Cohen, who portrayed the young John Winchester, will direct an episode.
● Richard Speight, Jr. will direct three episodes.
● There is a current planned endgame, which Jensen, Jared and Misha know about. It’s said to be satisfying and somewhat peaceful. The actors have taken care to redefine their former claims that they believed the show had to end with the Winchesters’ deaths (Jared, in particular, insisted on this theory for years, and changed his tune at SDCC), and explained that what they really wanted was a sense of earned finality, closure, and maybe even contentment.
● Per TV Insider, EP Bob Singer confirmed that they won’t be doing an “it’s all a dream” ending, and that it won’t be miserable. “Frankly, we don’t want it to be a total downer,” Singer says. “That would disappoint us, and the fans as well.” But will the brothers leave the world they’ve worked so hard to save time and time again in a better place? “I can’t promise that the world is all butterflies and sweetness at the end,” Singer says. However, he does vow to give viewers “an emotional season and a real ending,” he says. “We won’t do an enigmatic ending as in The Sopranos or St. Elsewhere.”
● At the TCAs, Jensen said about the finale: “This is certainly going to feel right and it’s going to feel good. It should put a lot of people in a position to feel great about the journey they took with the Winchester brothers.”
● Creator Eric Kripke will likely not return to contribute any writing to season 15. Jensen ran the ending past Kripke, who, given how the story has played out so far under Andrew Dabb, assured him that he could imagine no better ending.

Confirmed plot details: The episode will pick up mere moments after the season 14 finale, right back in the cemetery facing the newly freed ghosts and vengeful spirits from hell. Homeowners on a local street witnessed scenes of Jared and Misha as Sam and Castiel helping children to run from John Wayne Gacy’s ghost. The boys have upgraded their long-standing “fed suit” disguise to a closer imitation of the FBI’s actual field uniforms.
Speculation and theories: Fans witnessed scenes on a shopfront street of Jensen and Alex together near the Impala, in which Jack appeared to be alive with his burnt out eyes from the season 14 finale covered with sunglasses. Misha also posted a picture of the four stars together in the Impala during the filming of episode 1, in which Alex is wearing the glasses. However, the sunglasses may have been worn between takes. Also, given Dabb’s claim that Jack is in the Empty and not coming back in the near future, “Jack” may not actually be Jack here, but a reanimated corpse containing the Hell-escaped soul of another character.
Other details: This episode was shot 2nd of 20, after 15.04 (directed by Jensen Ackles) was shot first in production order – hence the production code in the synopsis, #1502.

Confirmed plot details: The teaser trailer tells us that Team Free Will seem to meet with a group of the quarantined ghosts in some sort of a parley. Lane Davies’ role proves that the show will continue to engage with some more of the most famous souls who escaped from Hell – Francis Tumblety was one of the lead suspects for the still-unidentified serial killer Jack the Ripper. Episode 2 is meant to be a close continuation or extension of episode 1, continuing to deal with the crisis of Chuck’s Hell explosion. Scenes were filmed that included quarantine area signs, and scenes were filmed inside a high school cafeteria that looks to be set up as an emergency shelter. Filming details from this episode imply that the general public has reached chaos level due to the ghostly “epidemic.”
Speculation and theories: Fans visiting the shoot on location confirmed that other well-known guest stars were on set, but were asked by crew not to share the secret of who might appear. Rob Benedict (God), Emily Swallow (Amara) and Osric Chau (Kevin) were all in Vancouver at the time of this episode’s filming and all three of those actors are confirmed to be appearing in season 15 at some point. Osric Chau has now been confirmed as appearing in this episode.
Other details: This episode was shot 3rd of 20, after 15.04 (directed by Jensen Ackles) was shot first in production order. Misha’s birthday fell during this episode, and the celebration is featured in a fun behind-the-scenes video blog about the day-to-day practices in the Supernatural hair and makeup trailer, posted by crew member Mikaela Peterson.

Confirmed plot details: According to production designer Jerry Wanek at the Vancouver Wayward Cocktails event, this episode will spend some time down below in Hell – though he couldn’t reveal who we might find down there. Wanek also confirmed that he got to create a ‘Trump Hotel’ style set for this episode, and shared pictures with the Supernatural Wiki. This episode also shot scenes at the same cemetery set-up where we left the boys in the season 14 finale.

Other details: This episode was shot 4th of 20, after 15.04 (directed by Jensen Ackles) was shot first in production order. Charles Beeson was a regular director of Supernatural in the early years and directed some of the show’s most iconic episodes, including “Playthings,” “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester,” “The Rapture,” “Changing Channels,” and most famously, “The French Mistake.” At VanCon, Jensen Ackles told fans that Beeson returned to the show for the final season as a favor to the stars. According to Jared, Jensen, Misha and Ruth, this episode included hours of wasted shooting due to some of of the worst “blooper reel” material that the cast has ever seen, and an extra camera-man brought in as a day-player was extremely confused as to why Beeson, who had experienced the cast’s chaos many times over the years, was not yelling cut. Some of the messed-around scenes to keep an eye out for include Rowena casting a spell in a foreign language and a scene in which all 5 cast members enter a room dramatically through a pair of double doors.

Confirmed plot details: According to Jensen Ackles at SDCC, this episode is something of a standalone. “It’s more of a one-off. We deal with the situation at hand in the first three episodes – we kind of find a way to get out of our predicament for now […] We’ve contained, at least, to some degree, this issue, but it’s not going to last. But while that’s happening I’m [Dean] is like ‘Hey, we gotta get out there, we gotta keep our skills sharpened, we gotta do some stuff. So Sam and Dean head out on a hunt.” Thanks to fan photographs taken on set, we know that the cast filmed scenes in a high school setting, including with a costumed beaver mascot. An version of Dean will appear with a beard and clothes reminiscent of Apocalypse World – scarf, tactical gloves, paramilitary style, and the same shirt that was worn in this photo, and he will fight a man dressed in a suit in the hallways of the Bunker.
Speculation and theories: There may be a time jump between episodes in which Sam and Dean grow beards. This is based on the fact that Jensen Ackles posted his traditional hiatus-beard-shaving transition photo set, but in the bearded photos he was covered in blood and dirt makeup. Given that it doesn’t make a lot of sense to perform a makeup test for continuity photos on a bearded face that soon won’t have a beard, there may have been some scenes filmed with the beard. This speculation was somewhat confirmed by “Shaving People, Punting Things.”
Other details: Episode 4 was shot first in production, to allow Jensen Ackles time to focus on his directorial prep before entering the daily filming cycle as an actor. This has been the case for each time Jensen has stepped behind the camera – beginning in 2010, the star directed the third-airing episode of season 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11. Speculation and theories: The title is obviously a Bible verse. It reads, in the most common translations: “The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts.” (KJV), or “The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.” (NIV) This concept is basically one that means that God’s trials and afflictions on a person are designed to refine and purify and prove a person’s true strength and faith, and make them the best that they can be. It’s easy to see how this could apply, in literal terms, to the narrative of Supernatural, at this point in time – perhaps the episode will be about Sam and Dean truly coming to terms with what they believe about what Chuck has done to them.

Confirmed plot details: According to EW, Kane is set to play Leo Webb, a former hunter and a friend of Dean Winchester. Filming took place at a bar dressed as a Texan roadhouse called “Swazye’s.” Dean and Leo will have a big night out in which Dean gets onstage and sings with the house band The Impalas, who are in reality made up of crew members who have performed together at parties for the show.
Speculation and theories: The fact that Leo is mentioned as a former hunter and an old friend of Dean’s specifically lends to the idea that this man is someone Dean knew in his most mysterious period – the short stretch of year between Sam leaving for Stanford and the brothers reuniting, when John gave a young twenty-something Dean the Impala and sent him out alone – a fact, remember, that Sam was surprised to learn in the pilot. Dean’s journey of independence and self-discovery during that time has been very, very lightly touched upon – we learned in season 5 that at some point, presumably around this time, he got his GED after dropping out of high school, but it remains a very unknown period of Dean’s life. The idea that Leo Webb may shed some light on that is a strong enough theory that EW pitched it in their article announcing the news.
Other cast: Jake Abel as Adam/Michael. He was on set in the weeks during filming of both episode 7 and 8, and appeared in videos with the cast.
Dean’s experience in Texas may be a djinn dream. A shot of him in a storeroom that contained Texan Star beer, tied to a chair and hooked up to an IV was seen in the Shaving People, Punting Things trailer, and the scene has not yet occured in the season. He’s wearing the same outfit as the promo stills and he’s also wearing it in the shots within a car yard. Episode 7 had just wrapped when the production team released this trailer, so all scenes within it are likely from episodes 1 – 7.
Using that logic, the Shaving People scene of Jake Able Squared – sitting across from himself at a diner, likely a scene between Michael and Adam – is also in episode 7, but it could have been something from the first days of 8.
Other details: Jeremy Adams’ first episode as a staffed Supernatural writer – in season 13 he came over from WB animation shows to co-write “Scoobynatural.” Castiel may have a new outfit – Misha showed off some neat new boots and differently cut pants during the filming of this episode. But this may not be a plot point.

Speculation and theories: The odder parts of the “Drowning” trailer – Dean holding a baby, a very different looking Sam and Dean – Sam in an aubergine suit and pashmina with a half ponytail, and Dean with fluffy bangs, an expensive watch, and a fancy tan jacket – clinking beers in the Bunker, Dean stepping out on stage – in front of red velvet curtains – immaculate in a white dinner jacket and boater hat – are probably from this episode, which seems to be about AUs – a variety of different What Ifs.
