In Supernatural season 12, Sam and Dean will have to deal with Mary Winchester hunting demons right beside them. At SDCC, Jared Padalecki discusses Sam’s conflicted feelings about his mom coming back.
Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith) made a surprise return in Supernatural season 11, and in the upcoming 12th season, the Family Business is back on track.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2016 we spoke to the cast about what to expect from Mary, as well as Sam and Dean’s reactions to her return.
Jared Padalecki spoke at length about Sam’s feelings about his mom’s return — as well as a lot of other awesome stuff — which you can check out below:
Says Padalecki, “I’m really excited to this year play a son. It sounds strange because I know John Winchester’s been on the show, but Sam and John weren’t father-son. It was contentious head-butting, they didn’t get along.”
When Mary returns, “Sam doesn’t have those issues — although ironically it’s probably more Mom’s fault than Dad’s fault that we’re where we are. It was her lineage that was the hunter family. But Sam now has a mom who he loves but he doesn’t know, so he cares for her but he doesn’t know how to care for her or what she needs, or vice versa.”
And of course, with Mary being a hunter, the boys are potentially faced with losing her all over again. That new worry is something that both Jensen Ackles and Samantha Smith also addressed (look for those interviews soon), but it sounds like Sam in particular will take issue with it when the pair finally reunite.
“She’s a hunter, so if the boys are gonna go on a hunt she’s not gonna be like, ‘Alright guys, call me when you get home, here’s a sandwich!’ She’s gonna be like, ‘Alright, I’m in. What do we do?'” says Padalecki.
And how is Sam gonna react to that? “I think Sam’s gonna be like, ‘Whoa whoa, Mom! We lost you before!’,” he says. “So it’s gonna be an interesting dynamic, and one that I — to the best of my recollection — I don’t think I’ve ever been able to play. Which is bizarre after 241 ours of television, as a character, having something that you haven’t yet done. So I’m looking forward to that.”
