The CW has released promotional stills from the Supernatural season 11 premiere, titled “Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire.”

Update (September 17): The CW has now released the official synopsis for Supernatural season 11, episode 1, “Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire.” It reads:

“THE WINCHESTERS FACE THEIR BIGGEST THREAT EVER — Picking up where the finale left off, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) must deal with the Darkness that has been unleashed. Castiel (Misha Collins) deals with the effects of Rowena’s (Ruth Connell) spell and recalls his brutal battle with Crowley (Mark A. Sheppard). Robert Singer directed the episode written by Jeremy Carver (#1102).”

Original story (September 16): We know Supernatural season 11 will pick up immediately following the season 10 finale, in which the newly unleashed Darkness spread across the land. Meanwhile, Rowena placed an attack dog spell on Castiel, siccing him on Crowley, whose fate was left up in the air.

Surprising no one, we can see from the stills below that Crowley is indeed alive following his confrontation with Castiel. The angel, on the other hand, appears to be the worse for wear as he struggles with the effects of the spell.

As for the Winchesters, their season 11 premiere arc seems to take place in a hospital, where the brothers bring an officer named Jenna, only to find bodies all over.

Check out the photos below:

According to Jensen Ackles, having the pre-Biblical Darkness as the season’s Big Bad unites the brothers and “puts them back in the car on the same team together, having one target and being unified in that mission.”

Jared Padalecki adds that the Winchesters are “finally accepting the fact that we’re stronger together than apart. And this far into the season, they’re certainly acting on that and I like it, personally.”

Additionally, Ackles teases that killing Death in the season 10 finale will have consequences. “What does that mean for all the reapers? And what does that mean for that part of the equation? And how is that going to rear its ugly head, which you know it will,” he wonders.

Supernatural season 11, episode 1, “Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire,” airs Wednesday, October 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
