The Supernatural season 11 premiere, “Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire,” airs tonight, as the brothers face the consequences of unleashing The Darkness.

The Road So Far

After Sam cured him of being a demon, Dean struggled with the bloodlust of the Mark of Cain for the remainder of the season. The search into a cure for the Mark led Sam and Charlie to the Book of the Damned, which was under the watchful eye of the Styne family. When Charlie stole the book, they hunted her down and, despite Sam and Castiel’s attempts at protection, murdered her. This sent Dean on a violent spiral of vengeance.

Eventually, though, the Book of the Damned offered a cure for the Mark, which Rowena was able to cast. After killing Death rather than Sam, Dean was freed of the Mark. However, this unleashed a pre-Biblical evil, known as the Darkness, on the world.

Meanwhile, Castiel recovered his remaining grace from Metatron’s hiding place, though his wings were still clipped. Rowena, meanwhile, cast an attack dog spell on the angel and sicced him on her son, Crowley, before escaping.
