Supernatural season 11 will be delving into pre-Biblical evil, and Jensen Ackles previews what to expect from The Darkness.

Supernatural season 10 ended with Dean being freed from the Mark of Cain, which turned out to be the lock to a prison holding in an evil that God and the archangels battled and eventually locked away — The Darkness. With the Mark free of a host, The Darkness was released. We closed the season with The Darkness engulfing the brothers.

So, with the brothers finally on the same page and facing an external Big Bad, what can fans expect in season 11? “As of right now we have it built as one specific entity, obviously that would be a character that we’re introducing,” teases Ackles. “But whatever the reach of that character, what that character can do, we’re not quite sure of.”

This tells us The Darkness will have a single avatar on Earth, perhaps like the leviathan when they were first released and took over Castiel.

Ackles adds, “We don’t know the scope of her powers.”

The Darkness, we can then conclude, will be a female. And, we note, there has been a single, recurring female character cast for season 11: Amara.

Conclusion? The “seductive and sinister” femme fatale will be The Darkness.

“This one’s interesting because it’s not really a monster,” Ackles says. “It’s more of a primal force that we know nothing about. There’s no lore; there’s no guidebook; there’s no instruction manual on how to deal with this.”

Supernatural season 11 premieres Wednesday, October 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
