Sheriffs’ retreat

Queen of everything Jody Mills attends a Minnesota-Dakotas sheriffs’ retreat. She’s stopped by a young woman on her way in, and Jody gives her some money before heading in. Sheriff Donna Hanscum is checking people in. She is checking Jody, who is worried about leaving Alex at home, when her ex-husband, Doug, comes up and is nasty to her.

In the bunker, meanwhile, Dean researches the Mark of Cain but is coming up with nothing.

Back at the retreat, Hibbing’s sheriff has the attendees pair up before hurrying off. Donna pairs up with Jody, and they talk to another sheriff, who says a body was found, eaten. Suspicious, Jody calls Sam.

The brothers don’t have any idea what might be eating people. Jody says she can handle things but will call if she can’t. Dean, though, is climbing the walls, so the brothers head to Minnesota.

Night at the bar

Back in Hibbing, Jody heads to the morgue to see the body, but it takes Donna, a local, to sweet talk their way in. Donna examines the body and can’t determine the type of animal bite while Jody goes through the personal effects and realizes a belt must be missing.

Meanwhile, Donna and Jody pay the Hibbing sheriff a visit at a bar. He says animal control is on the case, but his deputy interrupts, and they leave. Donna sees Doug dancing with a young, pretty sheriff, and Jody is supportive. As Donna heads to the bathroom, Jody gets the sheriff and his deputy to confess that there is a second body.

When Donna comes back out, Jody is gone — she’s outside, talking to a disruptive Alex on the phone. The two women bond over having trouble in their family lives.

Shady sheriff

The next day, Sam and Dean arrive at the retreat in their FBI duds. Jody hugs them, and they fill her in — the second body was also eaten and was missing a wallet. The Winchesters and Donna recognize each other, but Jody runs interference while the brothers investigate.

The Hibbing sheriff tells the the brothers that there is no traffic cam footage of the murder, but the deputy is clearly suspicious. Dean eventually convinces the deputy to tell him that the sheriff changed the password on the police server after the first murder.

Meanwhile, Doug returns and is gross again, so Jody confronts him.

After Doug leaves, Donna is unhappy. But when a careless comment causes Jody to have a flashback to her husband’s death, Donna apologizes.

She goes outside to get some air and comes across a blood trail. It leads her to a dead sheriff — and the Hibbing’s sheriff with vampire fangs. Donna, understandably, freaks.

Giving the Talk

When Dean finds Jody, she asks after him and offers support. Sam then arrives; he hacked the police server but the traffic cam footage was deleted.

Donna then comes in and pulls Jody aside. She tells Jody what she saw and Jody, of course, believes her. Jody leaves Sam a message with a motel room number the sheriff booked, then she and Donna head there. While Jody looks for clues, Donna finds sunblock. Donna also uses a pencil trick to uncover an address the sheriff wrote down.

When the Winchesters pick the lock on the door, Jody pulls out a machete — much to Donna’s shock. Everyone yells over each other, and Donna hears “vampire,” so Dean assigns Jody to give her The Talk. Donna makes the connection with the weight loss spa.

Sam maps the address — it’s an old farm outside of town. Donna wants to come along, and Jody vouches for her, so all four head to the farm. There, Dean hands out machetes.

First hunt

Sam spies the sheriff inside. Surprisingly, he tells the group to run — but it’s too late, as they’re captured by a nest of vampires led by the girl Jody gave money to.

Sam, Dean, Jody, and Donna are all tied up in the barn, as the vampires plan to eat them. The leader steals Dean’s belt, saying their group scavenges from their victims. It turns out the sheriff is an ex-member of their nest; he left because he didn’t want to keep killing. He’d only just found the latest body when Donna saw him.

While the villain monologues, Donna and Dean loosen their ropes. When the sheriff refuses to kill the prisoners, he is decapitated. Dean breaks free of his bonds and grabs the machete, and a fight ensues. Dean gets some kills in, but the leader is about to kill Jody when Donna decapitates her.

Afterward, Donna is both freaked out and excited. The world is now a darker place for her. Jody offers to help her with the supernatural stuff. Meanwhile, Dean says he didn’t feel like the Mark was pushing him, and he feels like himself. Of course, Dean is clearly lying and Sam knows it.
