Family matters

In Connecticut, a maid chooses the attire for the burial of a late heiress, Bunny, but tries on a pearl necklace. After that, she starts hearing some noises and goes to investigate, only to be confronted by Bunny herself. Bunny pulls the necklace from her throat and knocks her over the second floor railing, killing her. The butler, Philip, sees her but she just walks away.

Meanwhile, Dean and Sam discuss the complete lack of work they’ve come across. Dean says one of Bobby’s phones got a call two days earlier about Bobby being the beneficiary of Bunny’s estate. Dean figures he and Sam count as next of kin, so they head to Connecticut.

At the manor, they’re greeted by another maid, Olivia, who asks about Bobby and invites them inside. The brothers are met — and hit on — by some of Bunny’s relatives.

Heads will roll

The brothers talk to Philip, who calls the family “money-grubbing leeches” and gives the brothers what they were bequeathed so they don’t have to stay. Dean opens the envelope to find a jewel-encrusted cross — only the jewels aren’t real.

But the cross turns out to be a key, so the boys head back to the manor to find out what it’s for. If there’s a key, there must be a lock. There, two of Bunny’s relatives, spouses Stanton and Amber, fight. After Amber storms off, Stanton hears a voice calling his name so he goes to investigate — only to be met by the figure of a man with an ax, who cuts his head off.

The brothers have returned at just the wrong time, as they are detained by a detective for questioning. While waiting for their turn, the brothers overhear that Amber is claiming a ghost killed Stanton, and they perk up. Sam stays with the family while Dean goes snooping since their tools are in the car.

The butler didn’t do it

Sam talks to the relatives, who don’t like each other. Meanwhile, Dean finds a book that matches the cross the brothers were bequeathed, and when he pulls the book off the shelf, the shelf opens to reveal a secret door that the key unlocks. The door leads to the attic, where Dean finds a body wrapped in a carpet — the first maid — and Olivia, who Philip locked up.

Dean returns and fills Sam in. The brothers separate to look for the butler, and Sam runs into one of the women who has been hitting on him all night. She’s looking for a quickie, much to Sam’s discomfort.

Sam ends up pretending to be into her before walking away. He reaches the kitchen, where he sees a smear of blood that leads to Philip’s body with a knife in the back.

Elsewhere in the house, Dean confronts Philip. Sam texts him about Philip’s death, and “Philip” knocks Dean down before shedding his skin and disappearing.

Yep, shapeshifter.

Testing, testing

Olivia finds the brothers and Philip’s body in the kitchen and freaks out, but Sam and Dean convince her to help them. They have her pull out the silverware. They test each other and get no reaction so move on to the rest of the family.

Sam, for his part, plays into the cougar tendencies of the ladies in order to test them — no reaction.

Meanwhile, Dean finds Dash and Amber getting it on so blackmails the adulterers into touching the silverware, but no reaction from them either.

This clears everyone but the detective — who Olivia finds drowned in the toilet. With everyone confused, the brothers try to get order only to have the entire family turn on them. Dash grabs the detective’s gun and takes Sam and Dean to a security room and locks them in. Dean tries unsuccessfully to open the door with the knife, only to realize the silver is fake, which explains the lack of reaction.

But when the family orders Olivia to call the cops, she refuses and grabs Dash’s gun.

The maid in the kitchen with the revolver

Olivia reveals that she’s Bunny’s daughter. She had been locked up in the attic, and Philip was the only one who knew. Philip let Olivia out to serve as a maid and then locked her back up after the murder — but Dean freed her.

In the security room, Sam finds the gun safe and shoots the doorknob. While Dean goes to get silver bullets, Sam draws Olivia’s fire and distracts her.

“Killing you is the next best thing to killing Bobby Singer,” Olivia tells Sam. It turns out Bobby killed her father, a shifter Bunny had an affair with. After killing her father, Bobby went after Olivia. But Bunny begged for mercy, so Bobby agreed to spare Olivia if Bunny kept her locked up and even to take care of Olivia if anything happened to Bunny.

Olivia is about to shoot Sam when Dean shoots her from behind. Though the first shot kills her, her empties his clip into her.

BM scene

The family and the Winchesters leave as Dash calls the cops. Dash apologizes to the brothers, and Dean gives the key back to him, telling him not to tell anyone the Winchesters were there.

In the car, Sam asks Dean about his overkill, but Dean brushes it off. While Sam worries about demon residue or the Mark of Cain, Dean says he got anxious on his first kill since getting back in the saddle and wanted to make sure it was done right. He gets defensive and turns on the radio, drowning Sam’s concerns out.
