Back on the job

The episode opens in Washington, where a girl walks into a biker bar and seduces a biker into the back alley, only she slices his throat.

Meanwhile, Sam and Dean drink beers lakeside and toast to taking personal time. However, they can’t keep their mind off the hunt. Dean says he needs to work, and Sam agrees — provided that Dean lets him know if anything goes sideways.

Sam and Dean head to Washington — in costumes besides their FBI duds for once — and the sheriff tells them there have been kills with cut throats and missing hearts. A witness also allegedly saw the latest victim go out back with a girl, but there was no evidence of another victim. Sounds like a werewolf to the Winchesters.

They interview the witness, coaxing him into telling them that he saw the supposed female victim, bloody, at a farm before she disappeared. He thought she was a ghost. The brothers head out to the farm armed with silver bullets and follow a trail of dead chickens to the barn — where they find Kate.

Brothers and sisters

The Winchesters tie Kate up and she doesn’t deny the kills. Dean prepares to shoot Kate, but Sam stops him and suggests he do it; he doesn’t think Dean is ready. They’re interrupted, though, when Sam gets a call from the sheriff. There was another murder less than an hour ago, meaning Kate couldn’t have done it. Kate, however, frees herself and runs before they can get some answers. She left her phone behind, though, and Dean traces her most recent calls to a motel.

On the drive to the motel, Dean asks Sam whether he’s ready to be hunting, and the brothers argue over Lester and whose crime was worse. Dean suggests that maybe they both needed the time off.

At the motel, they see a girl leave Kate’s room so they follow her down a hiking trail — only it’s not Kate. She wolfs out and attacks, but Kate appears and pulls her away. Kate stops them from shooting the other girl, who flees, saying it’s her sister. Kate turned her sister into a werewolf, and she’s the one dropping bodies.

Second chances

At a diner, Kate shows the Winchesters a blade she carries in case she ever loses control. She’s never eaten a human heart — she ate all the chickens at the barn. She eats small game and meditates to keep the wolf under control.

After her ordeal in season 8’s “Bitten,” Kate walked away from her family to start a new life. However, her sister, Tasha, was in a car accident and not expected to make it. Kate went to the hospital to say goodbye but decided to turn her instead. While the sisters were on their own, Tasha gave into the werewolf and has been killing.

Kate wants to give Tasha every chance to make things right, but promises to “take care of it” if things don’t work out. Dean tells Kate the brothers can cure them — of course, there’s no cure, so Dean was setting a trap. Sam calls Dean out on putting their baggage at the girls’ feet.

Sister, sister

Kate leads the brothers to Tasha. On the drive, while Kate sleeps Sam confesses that he tortured other demons besides the one crossroads demon — but there were no other humans. Dean, meanwhile, admits to being embarrassed about everything he did as a demon. Dean also thanks Sam, but Sam says Dean never has to.

At a lake house, the sisters’ rendezvous point, Dean handcuffs Kate to the steering wheel and Kate realizes there is no cure. Dean says Tasha is in too deep and there’s no coming back from that. The Winchesters head into the cabin while Kate sobs in the car.

In the cabin, Sam finds Tasha in one of the bedrooms. He’s stopped from shooting, though, when another werewolf takes Dean at gunpoint. Dean is knocked down, so Sam drops his gun. Kate then comes into the house, but one of the werewolves grabs her — Tasha has been turning wolves to make a new family. Tasha tells Kate to either walk away or join her pack. When Kate says she isn’t walking away, Tasha tells her to eat Sam’s heart to prove herself. Kate, though, refuses.

The other wolves grab the brothers and take them into the living room to kill them. Meanwhile, Kate tries to reach Tasha — but she’s enjoying being a werewolf too much. Tasha wants a new life, doing whatever she wants, with Kate at her side. Kate tells Tasha she loves her and they hug — and Kate stabs Tasha.

In the living room, the brothers kill their captors, but by the time the brothers get back to the bedroom, Tasha is dead and Kate is gone.

Doing the right thing

In the Impala, Sam thinks they may have jumped back into hunting too quickly. He wants Dean to talk about what happened, but Dean says he just wants to get back in the saddle and do something good. Their conversation, though, is interrupted when Kate calls. Sam thanks her for saving their lives, and Dean tells her to keep moving and keep her nose clean so they don’t have to keep meeting. Kate says she’ll try but won’t make any promises.

After hanging up, Dean acknowledges that maybe he isn’t ready to hunt, but he just wants to do the right thing because he’s sick of doing the wrong one.
