Supernatural season 10, episode 10, “The Hunter Games,” aired tonight. Read our recap and discuss the episode with fellow fans.

On this episode of Supernatural, Dean deals with the Mark of Cain, Sam worries about Dean, Castiel worries about Claire, and Crowley is played by Rowena.

Mark of Cain

After the massacre at the ranch — which the characters seem to think was worse than most of the audience — Dean is determined to rid himself of the Mark. However, because the Mark outdates the lore, the Winchesters are forced to turn to Metatron. Castiel has him jailbroken from Heaven with the understanding that he would be returned alive.

When Metatron is confronted by Sam, though, he believes the younger Winchester is there to avenge Dean.

It comes as quite a shock, then, that Dean is alive and not a demon. Metatron claims to have a soft spot for the brothers so agrees to tell them how to rid Dean of the Mark. The first step, he says, is to get the First Blade. Sam, naturally, calls this the worst idea he’s ever heard, and he’s not wrong.

With no other ideas, though, the Winchesters call on Crowley, who has the Blade in his possession. Because he has a real soft spot for the Winchesters. They convince him to get the Blade but hold onto it until the brothers need it.

When Dean later confronts Metatron to get the second step, Metatron demands a price for the subsequent steps for removing the Mark. Dean, student of Allistair and wearer of the Mark, is having none of that and tortures Metatron until Castiel and Sam break into the dungeon and stop him.

The last words Metatron utters during the torture are, “The river ends at the source.” (Considering the Mark of Cain comes from Lucifer, might we be seeing him again?)

While Castiel returns a bloody Metatron to Heaven, Sam worries over Dean and suggests that part of Dean wants to give into the Mark. Cain has proven that it’s possible to live with the Mark, so Dean needs to fight the bloodlust.

Daughter gone rogue

While the Winchesters deal with Metatron, Castiel has his own concerns as Claire leaves. She finds herself under the sway of a couple of drifters who listen to her complain about Castiel and Dean. They suggest she hang out with them for awhile and even offer to kill Dean for Claire.

Claire agrees and sets up a meeting with Dean, but when Dean arrives — because Sam, for some inexplicable reason, let him leave the bunker alone after losing it with Metatron — Claire chickens out. Dean easily disarms his attackers, but when Claire freaks out, Dean is brought back to reality and wrecks a bench rather than the couple trying to kill him.

Later, Claire heads out back on the road, where Castiel finds her. They reconcile, but Claire wants to be on her own, though she promises to check in now and then.

Mother of the king

Meanwhile, Rowena is not-so-subtly sneaking around Crowley’s operation. She’s planting dreams about Crowley’s underlings attacking him, casting spells, and pretending to be a loving mother to her bonnie lad. She eventually convinces one of Crowley’s most trusted underlings to take the First Blade and then kills him, portraying him as a traitor to Crowley.

Rowena is awful and her motives are transparent. And we kind of love her.
