Three weeks before the premiere, a new Supernatural season 9 promo takes Dean on a rescue mission inside Sam’s head.

Watch the clip of old and new footage from TVLine below.

So what have we learned from this new promo?

Dean is on a rescue mission

We see some footage from previous promos in which Dean sits at unconscious Sam’s hospital bedside and demands of a doctor, “You’re telling me my brother’s life is in God’s hands?”

But we know the Winchester brothers will (literally) go to Hell and back for each other, so it’s no surprise that Dean has found a way to try to reach his brother — he’s going inside Sam’s head.

“Something happened back there in the church,” Dean tells Sam as they drive down a road in the Impala in Sam’s mind. “You’re dying, Sam.” In another Impala shot, Dean adds, “Just because you’re dying doesn’t mean you’re dead. We’re going to fight this.”

We also see Sam and Bobby walking through Sam’s dreamscape. “What you call dying, I call leaving a legacy,” Bobby tells him.

Hell is in shambles

In the promo, Sam and Dean bring a captive Crowley into a Men of Letters dungeon and demand that he tell them the name of every demon on Earth. When Crowley refuses, Dean punches him.

Crowley’s capture leaves a void in the leadership of Hell, and Abaddon seems ready to take his place. She ominously appears in the promo with a group of armed soldiers.

“You go to Hell and you tell them I’m coming,” she says before we get a shot of her throwing Dean through a window.

The angels are out for blood

The angels who fell from Heaven at the end of season 8 will spend season 9 trying acclimate to life on Earth. In this promo, Castiel tells a fallen angel, “I will devote my life to helping you all.”

“They don’t want your help,” she replies. “They want your head.” This is underscored by her hitting the newly-human Castiel in the back of the head with a block of wood.

Death is looking for Sam

Our favorite Horseman is back in season 9, now waiting for Sam. We think it’s pretty impressive that Sam’s impending death warranted the presence of Death himself rather than one of his Reapers, and we’ll be curious to see how that plays out.

In the promo, Sam enters a house where Death greets him. We see another shot in the promo in this house where Death watches on as Dean tells Sam, “There ain’t no me if there ain’t no you.”

Supernatural season 9 premieres Tuesday, October 8 at 9:00 p.m. on The CW.
