In front of tonight’s new episode of Supernatural, Jared Padalecki teases what’s coming up next for the brothers.

Before Supernatural went on its most recent break, Dean faced off against Cain and eventually killed him with the First Blade. However, instead of returning the Blade to Crowley as promised, Dean handed it over to Castiel — earning the ire of the king of Hell. Cain’s death, however, wasn’t the end of Dean’s struggles with the Mark of Cain, which he took on to defeat Abaddon. And Sam will be there to help his brother through the trials and tribulations ahead.

“Sam knows his brother very well and he knew when he saw Dean’s face after Dean had gotten rid of Cain — but still had the Mark — that Dean was not okay,” Padalecki says. “Sam’s been down in dark places and Dean has always helped him through, so I know, selfishly, Sam doesn’t want to lose his brother, but unselfishly, Sam would like to help his brother the same way that his brother’s helped him many times.”

Padalecki previews that Sam will be looking for help behind Dean’s back from sources like Castiel and Charlie: “Sam’s going to try to keep moving his feet and not just ignore what he knows his brother is going through.”

While Sam is keeping his search for a cure for the Mark on the down low, Dean is keeping some secrets of his own — specifically that Cain warned Dean that he would eventually kill Sam, as Cain killed Abel. “Dean is trying to pawn it off like, ‘Demons lie and you just said that to get under my skin,’” Padalecki explains. “So I think Dean is trying to ignore it, but of course, it’s swirling around somewhere in the back of his brain.”

This will, of course, be far from the first time that the brothers have kept something from each other; considering doing so usually ends terribly for them, we’ll hope this secrecy doesn’t last too long and the brothers are able to help each other carry their burdens.

However, secrets won’t be the only issues raised for the Winchesters in the final run of season 10. Because killing Cain didn’t remove the Mark, the Winchesters “come up with another way to possibly remove the Mark of Cain from Dean’s arm, but it involves us running into several big bads that are all in cahoots with each other who are trying to thwart our goals, and we see that very, very soon,” Padalecki previews.

Supernatural airs Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
