See Supernatural executive producer Jeremy Carver introduce tonight’s mid-season premiere, “Torn and Frayed,” below.

In this preview, Carver introduces the plot of “Torn and Frayed”: “In this episode, we find Crowley going on offense when he and his minions are basically working over a captured angel hoping to find what makes an angel tick by basically dialing into this guy’s hard wiring.” Judging from the clip, the angel is Samandriel, who the brothers met in this season’s “What’s Up, Tiger Mommy?”

“Castiel has launched something of a rescue mission to save this angel with the help of Sam and Dean,” Carver says. According to the episode synopsis, it is Naomi, the angel Castiel has been forced to report to on the Winchesters before having his memories wiped, is the one to order the rescue mission in the first place.

Carver concludes that, “What is so powerful about episode 10 is that the boys are really, really faced with deciding once and for all what’s most important going forward and where they stand in each other’s lives.” This comes on the heels of Dean distracting Sam by faking an emergency message from Amelia in order to protect Benny.

The episode synopsis tells us that Amelia, who Sam came face-to-face with at the end of the mid-season finale, will give Sam an ultimatum: to either stay with her or get out of her life permanently. The clip indicates that Sam chooses to stay with his brother but is extremely unhappy about Dean’s subterfuge. We’re guessing this anger is going to linger for several episodes in the back half of the season.

“Torn and Frayed” airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET.
