Supernatural season 11, episode 3, “Bad Seed,” aired tonight. Read our recap and discuss the episode with fellow fans.

Curing Cas

The Winchesters went on a side quest this week after finding Castiel in the bunker at the end of the last episode. Realizing that the only way to remove the spell is to get Rowena to reverse it, the brothers search her out. Rowena, for her part, has been trying to recruit witches from the Grand Coven to her own new coven that she has hilariously dubbed the Mega Coven. You keep doing you, Rowena. We love you.

It’s through these witches that she learns Crowley is still alive. When Crowley sends a demon assassin against her during another meeting with witches, there’s enough chaos that they make the news — which puts the Winchesters on Rowena’s trail.

The Winchesters find one of the witches who was at the meeting and survived, and eventually convince her to scry Rowena’s location. The brothers manage to apprehend Rowena and bring her back to the bunker. They’ve barely locked her up in their dungeon when they realize that Cas is gone, though.

In an awkward car ride during which the brothers are tracking Cas’ phone, Rowena informs Dean of her deal with Sam to kill Crowley in exchange for removing the Mark of Cain. Dean’s not happy about the secrets — what else is new? — but there’s no time to worry about it since they’ve found Cas’ general location.

Cas has been stalking a poor girl and is about to kill her when Dean finds him. The girl escapes, but Cas starts beating the crap out of Dean. Before it can get too bad, though, Sam and Rowena arrive. With a gun to her head, Rowena reverses the spell. She, however, escapes while the brothers are distracted by Cas’ recovery.

Rowena is a smart cookie, since she realizes the Winchesters aren’t going to hold to a deal they make with her, so she peaces out. Back to Mega Coven recruiting, hopefully.

Crowley and Amara

Crowley — sorry, Uncle Crowley — is hoping to shape Amara into an ally. He’s giving her everything she wants and filling her with all kinds of information. However, Crowley quickly realizes he’s in over his head, as Amara is actually a primordial force and more powerful than Crowley can comprehend.

Amara, for her part, is struggling with understanding the world she’s found herself in. God, she thinks, has done a terrible job with what He’s created since locking her away, and she has her own plans. But rather than share what those plans are, she’d rather eat all the demons in Crowley’s employ. At least Crowley is having his demons possess dead meatsuits, so no innocents were killed in the feeding of The Darkness.

By the end of the episode, Amara has aged up to a teenager — and she’s still hungry.

Interestingly, Amara thinks the ideas of Heaven and Hell, good and evil are small potatoes. So, what might she be after? There’s an interesting scene in which “young” Amara speaks to her “adult” self in the mirror, and her “adult” self promises that her destiny will come into focus as she gets stronger.

Whatever it is, Crowley is starting to realize their goals may not line up after all.

An angel and a demon walk into a bar

In a small aside that was perhaps the highlight of the episode, an angel and a demon sit down at a bar and have drinks together. Grunts from their respective worlds, the angel and demon each complain about what’s been going on in Heaven and Hell respectively since the alarms went off. They know they are expendable according to their leaders and hate it, and things are only getting worse since The Darkness was released.

This was something we’ve never seen in the show before, and it was a breath of fresh air.
