Supernatural season 11, episode 2, “Form and Void,” aired tonight. Read our recap and discuss the episode with fellow fans.

Dean

Dean brings Jenna and Amara to her grandmother’s house. While in a crib, though, Amara starts manifesting telekinetic powers. Jenna and her grandmother are awakened by noises and find Amara demanding to be fed by telekinetically throwing letter blocks at the wall. Jenna calls Dean and tells him about Amara, so Dean turns around immediately.

When Dean arrives, he finds that Jenna’s grandmother called a priest, who sent over an exorcist: Crowley. Crowley has his own exorcism operation going; he leaves his own followers alone but exorcises those not with him. Crowley feels intense darkness within the house.

After comforting Amara, Jenna comes downstairs and slits her grandmother’s throat. Crowley and Dean go looking for Jenna, and they end up in Amara’s room. Dean sees the mark on Amara’s body and makes the connection to The Darkness.

They find Jenna destroying religious figures in her grandmother’s room. Jenna’s soul is gone; Amara consumed it. Jenna attacks Dean, but Crowley tosses her into the ceiling; she comes down, dead. Cue conflict between Crowley and Dean because Crowley wants Amara.

Meanwhile, Amara ages up and gets out of her crib — echoes of Lilith, anyone? Crowley finds her walking down the street and offers her some captive souls.

Sam

Sam, meanwhile, tries to fight his infection and captures another infected man. According to the infected man, there is no specific rate of infection — some die quickly while others die slowly. Sam, though, remains determined to find a cure.

Sam startles when he hears a woman singing “O, Death.” He follows the voice and finds a woman, Billie, who knows his name. She’s a reaper and isn’t happy about Death’s death. She has a message: “It’s over.” The “it”? Sam and Dean dying and coming back. While Death had a soft spot for the Winchesters, the reapers aren’t going to take them to heaven or hell when they die — and there’s no coming back after that. That’s an interesting twist as it ups the stakes for the brothers for the first time in a long, long time.

Sam, feeling hopeless, heads into the chapel and prays. He says he’s made his peace with dying, but Dean deserves a life. He then asks for a sign of hope. Later, as he’s walking through the halls, he collapses with visions of, we’re guessing, his time being tortured in the Cage.

As Sam’s condition worsens, he takes a hint from Billie’s words about him being unclean in the Biblical sense to mean that he can be purified in the Biblical sense — with holy oil and fire. Somehow it works, and Sam is freed of those nasty veins.

At the hospital, Sam plays music to lure in three infected people, and he uses fire and holy oil to purify them as well. He enlists their help to save everyone else.

Castiel

Castiel, meanwhile, is chained up and tortured by the angels Efram and Jonah. They want to know where Metatron is. The torture session is thankfully interrupted by Hannah in a new form. She dismisses Efram and Jonah and frees Cas, though he asks to keep his bonds.

Hannah tries to heal Cas, but she’s unable to break through Rowena’s magic. With alarms going off in heaven, Cas tells Hannah The Darkness is real. He then realizes that Hannah set up the whole scenario to get information. Hannah feels betrayed by Castiel freeing Metatron.

Jonah and Efram return to hack Castiel’s brain to find Sam and Dean’s location. Hannah tries to stop them, but they attack her. This infuriates Cas, and he frees himself and attacks both Efram and Jonah. Cas kills them both, but not before one kills Hannah.

The brothers reunite at the bunker, where they find Cas, who asks for help.
