Hunted

We open with a couple of Cajuns hunting Charlie. She’s found the Book of the Damned, but the leader says the Book belongs to his family. He has Jack Sparrow’s compass, which points to what he wants most: his family’s Book. Charlie manages to flee from her pursuer, but not before getting shot.

In the bunker, Dean tells Sam about Crowley, Rowena, and the Mark being a curse.

Charlie calls the Winchesters and tells them she found the Book buried in Spain, but the moment she unearthed it and its translation notes, she’s been hunted. The Winchesters direct her to one of Bobby’s cabins in the area and promise to meet her.

Dean finds a curse box to store the book in, and they head out to meet Charlie. Dean rocks out to some classic rock in the Impala and tells Sam that he wants a vacation on the beach. Sam hasn’t seen Dean so light in a long time, and he goes with it.

Complications

At the cabin, Charlie shows the brothers the Book. Dean quickly finds that the Book calls to him, so he decides it’s best he doesn’t touch it. Instead, he researches Charlie’s pursuers based on a sketch of the crest her pursuer had tattooed on him.

While Dean looks through the Men of Letters’ resources about occult families, Charlie and Sam work on the Book. However, the translation is far more complicated than anticipated. Dean doesn’t have any better news, as he discovered the family: the Steins, a piece of work family that even aided the Nazis before they came to power.

Dean becomes less and less confident about the Book, realizing the consequences of magic of this power could have extreme side effects. He’d rather destroy the Book and look for another way to cure him.

Sam, though, finally gets to express some feelings in words and tells Dean he refuses to let this go on until Dean turns into a demon again. Frustrated, Dean leaves to get Charlie some snacks.

Charlie asks Sam about the fight, and Sam brings her up to speed with what’s been going on between them since the Demon Trials. He mentions Stanford and Jess but finally admits that he’s accepted that hunting is his life, but he can’t do it without Dean.

Hunters vs. Steins

At a local convenience store, Dean buys some snacks but recognizes the tattoo on the cashier’s arm as the one Charlie sketched. He sees the actual cashier in the mirror over the register, dead behind the counter.

Dean pulls his gun, but Stein distracts him and another man comes in and grabs Dean. Stein warns Dean about the magic of the Book. Dean manages to escape and unloads an entire clip into his hulking captor to take him down while the leader escapes.

Dean rushes back to the cabin, and the Steins follow. Dean throws holy oil into the fire place and tells Sam to burn the book, just as the Steins arrive. Dean and Charlie fight while Sam appears to throw the Book in the fire. The leader attacks Sam, but Sam kills him.

Angel roadtrip

Cas and Metatron roadtrip to find Cas’ grace. They stop for waffles, where they are attacked by an angry cupid. The cupid manages to take down Cas, but Metatron kills him, saving Cas. Cas isn’t swayed from his hatred, and he shouldn’t be.

Metatron leads them to a library, saying there are clues in books that will lead to the grace. As they look, Metatron pushes Cas about what his mission is; Hannah has restored order in Heaven, making it run more smoothly than it ever has, so what is Cas doing? Cas doesn’t have an answer, and Metatron uses the distraction to paint some angel-killing sigils with the blood from his bullet wound.

While Cas seems to slowly and painfully die, Metatron retrieves his true target: the Demon Tablet. However, while Metatron gloats, Cas discovers his grace and reabsorbs it. Cas’ wings are looking pretty shabby, though, and Metatron gets away.

Bad man, sad man

In the bunker, Sam and Cas talk about what happened. Charlie and Dean then return, and Charlie and Cas meet for the first time. Cas heals her carpal tunnel and her bullet wound, and Charlie believes they’ve become best friends. Dean’s also glad to see Cas with his grace back, though Cas lies about how he got it.

As “Behind Blue Eyes” plays, we learn that Sam didn’t actually burn the Book of the Damned; he switched books and brought the Book of the Damned with him. Not only that, but Sam brings the Book to Rowena, asking her to help him decipher it and cure Dean. Rowena is prepared to discuss terms as the episode closes.
